The War of 1812 is the Forgotten War, the last time the USA and Britain fought against one another, but it created some of the most iconic images in the American Story; there's the defence of Fort McHenry and the writing of The Star-Spangled Banner; a dying captain coining the motto of the US Navy "Don't give up the ship!"; and the burning of the White House and Capitol Building by the British. For Canadians, the war signals the birth of the Canadian national spirit as Britain's North American colonies beat off repeated invasion attempts by the USA, and nowhere was the struggle for that spirit more fraught than in Upper Canada, what is now Ontario. During the Bicentenary year of The War of 1812, Gareth Davis examines how visitors can rediscover the past as well as enjoy some of the signature tourism experiences of both the Capital Region and Ontario. The War of 1812 Trail brings to life the past and present of one of the most important episodes in both American and Canadian history.

Part 1: Capital Region USA
Gareth Davis follows the War of 1812 Trail from Washington DC, the scene of the devastating British attack; through Virginia, visiting the home of wartime President James Madison, and parasailing over the anchorage of the British fleet; to Maryland, where the rockets' red glare and bursting bombs inspired the national anthem. Gareth discovers how visitors can rediscover the past, the attractions and sights on offer, and some of the Capital Region's signature tourism experiences.

Part 2: Ontario Canada
Gareth Davis continues the War of 1812 Trail in Ontario, Canada; from Niagara where many of the war's key battles were fought; through Toronto which was captured and burnt by the Yanks; to Ottawa to join in with Canadians' celebration of their national holiday, Canada Day. Gareth takes the famous Maid of the Mist through Niagara Falls, helicopters over the Niagara River landing in one of the region's many vineyards for lunch amongst the vines, and steps out at 1200 feet on the CN Tower's Edgewalk to assess the changing face of Lake Ontario.
