Le monde Magique de Ladislas Starewitch (1926-1949)

The first Polish animator and one of the first animation makers in the world, Władysław Starewicz was an ingenious experimenter, an expert in novel special effects and an enthusiast of entomology from which he started his wondrous adventure with animated films. He authored several dozen original, very elaborate and technically innovative time-lapse puppet animations which brought him recognition and success.
–––
The director and animator, whose name went down in cinematographic history of Lithuania, Russia and France, where he lived and worked, has been all but forgotten in Poland. His figure is interestingly made more familiar by the film Treser żuków / The bug trainer (2008) – a Polish and Lithuanian co-production – not only recounting the life and work of the great magician of animation, but also trying to recapture the fabulous and magical world of the films of the precursor of puppet animation.

Le monde Magique de Ladislas Starewitch (1926-1949)

Starewicz was a great magician of film, as well as a great craftsman, who created that magic with his own hands. He was also a comprehensively gifted person who created the scripts of his films, crafted wonderful dolls, impressive set design, as well as operated the camera – often in a very inventive way. He was an editor and director. Doing what he loved his whole life, he created around 70 films – including over a dozen feature films.

Le monde Magique de Ladislas Starewitch (1926-1949)

However, it is not the impressive numbers that are most important about the director’s achievements, but the fabulous, sparkling cinematography that, among others, lets us watch funny melodrama of beetles, adventures of a rat driving a car, a dog visiting an underwater world, an elephant’s flight over a town, as well as the vivid dreams of several characters.

Le monde Magique de Ladislas Starewitch (1926-1949)

Just like the good old fairy tales, the Starewicz's films are full of fantasy and wisdom, did not lose their values. The stories of animals and bugs shows us what we know from human world, giving us universal messages or morals.
