One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs defied all expectations when it was released way back in 1938. Critics said it couldn’t be done. Audiences were thrilled with it, it was revolutionary and dawned a new age of feature animation. Walt Disney took a huge risk investing into the making of this film, had it not been the wild success it would have buried the studio. Because Snow White became an instant classic, the first crown jewel in a long line of crown jewels, Walt was able to build an empire from it. Now after several iterations on the home video market, the Diamond Edition has been released onto Blu-ray disc, featuring a stunningly restored image and sound track that restores the film to its former glory. Its as if it was produced just last month the film quality is that good. As is tradition with Walt Disney, they got the idea for the film from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and promptly “Disneyfied” it. The story and characters in Snow White bear somewhat of a resemblance to the original, but are changed and tweaked in such a manner that it no longer resembles the original in order to fit the whims of Walt and company. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, its just now the story of Snow White in our collective conscience now belongs to Disney (and perpetual copyright) and not the Brothers Grimm. But the basic story remains the same, a young maiden is kicked out by her jealous step mother and she goes to hide with seven dwarfs for a while waiting for some sort of rescue from a handsome Prince. But, the evil step mom disguises herself and poisons Snow White so everyone thinks she’s dead when really she’s just sleeping. The Prince upon seeing her lying in state kisses her breaking the spell and they live happily ever after. Simple enough right? This film is the template that practically every other Disney film is based on. An evil step mother (What’s Walt’s obsession with bad step moms?), the hottie bashful girl next door type who sings to animals, the handsome Ken doll for a Prince, and of course some sort of comic relief this time in the form of 7 dwarf bachelors, with much singing in between. Although the overall story arc involves Snow White and the Queen, the bulk of the film spends it time with the antics of the Dwarfs and Snow Whites obsessive compulsive quest to clean their house. She really crimps on their bachelor lifestyle, making them clean up and act like grown ups. There’s a bad joke in there somewhere. This Blu-ray edition of the film to put it simply, looks fantastic. The digital clean up and enhanced coloring just makes this film pop, and with the cleaned up soundtrack its completely refreshed. Its not entirely perfect, I did notice some blur with certain scenes with panning or zooming motions. There was also a tiny bit of artifacting with certain colors as well, which is evident on a bigger screen, but not enough to take away from the overall experience. Because the film predates widescreen, there is the option to fill the background with artwork from the movie if that bothers you enough, I just chose to watch it normally. There is a previous Platinum DVD edition out there, and studios love recycling, so much of the material is not new which is kind of disappointing. Make sure to check out the commentary track because they took original interviews with Walt Disney and spliced it in. Both Blu-ray discs still have plenty of extra materials, and beyond that there is the BD-Live material if one so desires, but somehow I was expecting to see more on the disc unless I missed it. There is lots of historical information on how the movie was made and its effects on future animated projects and its place in history, and discussions about deleted scenes and the usual items. The interactive piece with the Hyperion Studios lot hosted by Andrew Stanton (A digital CGI pioneering director) of Toy Story fame is a nice addition. Still, this is the best damn version of Snow White this side of the original premiere you will see anywhere. For any Disney fan, or animation buff this is a must have. Or, if classic Disney fairy tales is your thing, this movie should be on the shelf.

It’s hard to imagine that the gargantuan empire that the Walt Disney company has amassed over the last 75+ years hinged on the success or failure of a single film: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937). When Walt came up with the idea of making a feature-length animated motion picture most critics laughed at him. His idea came to be known as “Disney’s Folly” long before it had been seen by a single person. Initially anticipating a production budget of around $250,000, the animated feature eventually ballooned up to a then-massive total of over $1.8 million. Most would have assumed that the odds of recouping any of that grand sum would be nil, but as we all know, Disney managed to be repaid in spades. The success that Walt Disney enjoyed with “Snow White” allowed him to vastly expand the Disney brand, eventually culminating in theme parks, numerous feature-length animated films, an animation studio, and countless other endeavors. Now that the film is over 70 years old, how does it hold up?
Surprisingly well, as a matter of fact. I hadn’t really sat and watched “Snow White” for a number of years; I was probably 10 years old when I last saw the entire film. But I knew it would still play just as well for me now as it did then. Disney was a master craftsman in the field of animation (among many others), and he was superbly talented at creating timeless films that could be viewed by anyone, at any age, and still be enjoyable. Snow White (Adriana Caselotti) works as a maid, toiling under her wicked stepmother, the Queen (Lucille La Verne), a woman as vain as she is cruel. When the Queen’s Magic Mirror (Moroni Olsen) informs her that Snow White, not she, is “the fairest in the land” the Queen demands that Snow White be killed. After a huntsman (Stuart Buchanan) chases her into the woods, and ultimately allows her to go free, she befriends a group of seven dwarfs who work in a nearby mine after stumbling into their cottage. When the Queen learns that Snow White lives still, she uses her magic to transform into an old woman, and seduces Snow White into taking a bite of a poison apple. The dwarfs arrive too late, but they manage to corner the Queen high upon a mountaintop, where a confrontation commences. It’s a tale as old as time, or so it would seem. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t familiar with this film. It’s practically a right of childhood passage to watch Disney classics, and most parents seem to start off with this inaugural picture. Walt worked for many years getting all of the aspects of the film right, but most troubling for him was the animation. He felt that the most important piece of the story was making sure that the audience could get a sense of realism from these animated characters. The script was less problematic, though it did go through many drafts. At one point it was intended to be more of a comedy, and many sight gags were intended to be included. However, Walt wisely decided that the film needed to be more serious in tone if audiences were to take it as such, so he jettisoned many of the more outlandish comedic elements in favor of a more straight-forward approach. “Snow White” is a film that has withstood the test of time, and come out as an unheralded masterpiece. Walt was even given an honorary Academy Award for the film, one large statue along with seven smaller ones. Its success directly contributed to the Disney animated classics we all know today and it is currently the only animated film on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest American films of all-time (ranked number 34 out of 100 films listed). I make it no secret that I’m a huge fan of Disney as a man, of his animated features, and his incredible theme parks. And it still amazes me to think that, had “Snow White” failed to generate much interest at the box-office, we may not have any of it.
