This is the film that introduced a new kind of monster to the world’s cinema screens. A sensation on its initial release in Asia, Mystics in Bali was deemed too bizarre and shocking to be screened in the west. Until now… This is the first time the film has been released in the US and is completely uncut and digitally remastered from the rare original negative.

The film tells the story of a young American woman who goes to Asia in search of the secrets of ancient magic. One night in the forest, she encounters a female member of the terrifying cult of Leyak. She agrees to become the Leyak’s disciple and begins to indulge in many strange and savage rites. But the Leyak witch has secret plans for her young acolyte. Plans that culminate in one of the most bizarre and shocking scenes in all horror cinema.

The holy grail of Asian cult cinema!

After having read about Mystics in Bali on more than one occasion, I was pretty anxious to check it out for myself as I’d never been lucky enough to see a ‘flying head’ picture before. Well, Mondo Macabro has once again stepped up to the plate and hit another home run with their DVD release of this genuine oddity.

Mystics in Bali (1981) [Mondo Macabro] [Re-UP]

The story starts off with a young woman from America named Catharine who is on vacation in Bali. While she’s there, she wants to get some research done for a book that she’s writing on black magic and so she has her friend Mahendra introduce her to a local witch, skilled in the arts of the Leyak. The Leyak is a strange and evil cult that has the ability to change shape and can also sometimes shoot bolts of electricity out of their fingers as well. This witch in particular tends to laugh like a coked up hyena every few minutes as well, probably just for dramatic effect.

Anyway, the witch agrees to take Catharine under her wing and teach her the black arts, but of course everything has its price. It seems that when Catharine is sleeping that the witch is able to use her head, that conveniently detaches from her body complete with hanging spinal chord and entrails, to fly around town and suck babies out of their mothers’ wombs by flying around between their legs.

By this time, Mahendra has fallen for Catharine so he recruits his uncle, who happens to be a Warlock of sorts, though for the side of good, and some of his buddies to take down the witch and to try and free Catharine from her control.

If that above synopsis sounds a little crazy, you don’t know the half of it. Words cannot do this film justice. Every few minutes there is something different going on and it moves and an incredibly fast pace even by horror movie standards.

Worth mentioning though is how this film reflects a lot of the fears and superstitions of the audience for which it was primarily made. While flying heads and women turning into pigs might seem hokey to us (especially when it’s presented with some extremely dated looking effects work), a large majority of this is based on local folk tales and religious stories that have gone back for generations in Indonesia.

That being said, I’m not altogether sure how seriously we’re to take this movie and without knowing much more about Indonesian horror cinema than what I learned from the included documentary, it’s hard to tell if we’re supposed to see the film as scary or funny or both. Either way, it makes for an extremely entertaining viewing experience and comes highly recommended for those with an open mind looking for something more than a little different. Mystics In Bali remains a totally over the top film that needs to be seen by any self respecting world horror enthusiast.

When it comes to cinema, gems are hard to find, but now and again you'll find yourself sitting in front of a film thinking to yourself " why the Hell have I never seen this?"

Honestly, I had never even heard of this film, but one of the many movie magazines I buy did a blurb on it a few years ago, and I thought I should hunt it out, but other, seemingly more important releases always overshadowed it. This was a mistake, as I can't even remember what some of those other films may have been. I should have immediately grabbed Mystics in Bali the very second I heard of it!

Mystics in Bali tells of curious tourist Cathy Kean (played by German tourist Ilona Agathe Bastian, who had no acting experience but did the film so she could stay in Bali longer) who wishes to learn the magical ways of the Leyak, an Indonesian black art. Her friend, and potential lover Mahendra (Yos Santo) takes her deep into the jungle to meet a cackling old Leyak witch (Sophia WD) who takes Cathy under her wing as an apprentice. She starts by learning a few spells but soon discovers that once you are under the thrall of a Leyak, it is difficult to get out. Maybe even impossible, even with the assistance of local shamen and mystics!

Mystics in Bali (1981) [Mondo Macabro] [Re-UP]

Mystics in Bali is one of those 'kitchen sink' films: you know, as in it has everything but! Witches (well, Leyaks), metamorphosis, floppy titted pig women, ancient mystical masters, flying vampire heads, people vomiting live mice, awkward romance and most incredulous of them all, a baby eaten right out of a pregnant woman's… um… punani.

Now don't tell me you didn't want all that in one film.

Mystics in Bali (1981) [Mondo Macabro] [Re-UP]

It is without a doubt one of the nuttiest and most entertaining films I have ever seen! If I am to recall how I felt after watching this, I would compare it to how I felt after watching Evil Dead for the first time, though this isn't at all scary like Evil Dead was the first time I watched it. Although, I was about 13 then, so give me a break.

If you don't have Mystics in Bali in your collection, it is an error you must immediately fix.
