On the eve of World War II (1939) English officer Ralph Denistoun is in Nazi Germany on an espionage mission to recover a poison gas formula from Prof. Krosigk. He is helped by Lydia and her band of gypsies. Naturally romance develops along the way.

This is a great costume drama starring Marlene Dietrich and Ray Milland that looks better each time I watch it.

Unlike Dietrich's usual nightclub singer fantasy tales full of stylishly shot montages demonstrating the excesses of the time, Golden Earrings is a straight drama requiring Dietrich to create a character and live within its confines and she does it with aplomb.

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

The story concerns a high ranking British officer (Ray Milland) in a rest home following the war. His fellows wonder how a major general got pierced ears, but none of them dare to ask. He receives a much-forwarded package that contains a pair of golden earrings and then he gets on a plane back to the continent. That sets the opening and the rest of the tale unwinds as he explains to his fellow passenger just how he got the golden earrings…

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

Milland's character, Denistoun, was part of British Intelligence before the war and, prior to the outbreak of hostilities, was sent to find a German scientist with a new formula for poison gas. This is espionage and anyone caught under those circumstances would be written off. His partner and he are captured but break away and make their escape into the countryside each taking separate routes to avoid detection. They plan to meet at a crossroads with a certain method of recognition but meanwhile Milland meets Lydia (Dietrich) who as a lone gypsy woman is riding the less traveled lanes and manages to disguise him including giving him a pair of golden earrings along with dying his skin dark.

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

At the meet, the Germans surprise them and his friend (Richard Byrd) escapes on his bicycle but soon after is shot so Milland must accomplish his mission and return to England by hook or by crook.

The movie has a lot of developments showing the various ways gypsies deal with situations but the main theme is the growing romance between the very dissimilar gypsy Lydia and the proper Englishman Denistoun.

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

Milland does remember his mission and keeps to it but certainly gets accepted by the gypsy community which we are told is usually closed to outsiders. Milland returns to England and that is the end of the flashback but we see a epilog that shows his return to Lydia and we hope, true love.

Marlene Dietrich had to dye her face and hands dark and wear dark hair and act as a very earthy woman unlike her usual nightclub characters. The whole mystique built up about her by Josef Von Sternberg was dispensed with and she had to put on a real character and she made Lydia very endearing. I've watched the movie several times and liked it fine at first but like it even more each time I watch it. That is a good sign of a really well made story in my book.

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

Ray Milland was very good and romantic as well and played it very well even with the golden earrings which was very out of fashion in the late 1940s but would certainly not get a second glance today.

Golden Earrings (1947) [Re-UP]

I've watched this film perhaps a dozen times, and yet it always stays fresh with me. I think it's one of the best things Dietrich has ever done. This is a Dietrich you've never seen before. Not a worldly femme fatale, but an earthy, highly engaging woman. The interplay between this uncultured gypsy (Dietrich) guided by the spirit world and the stuffy, establishment rationalist(Milland) is both funny and poignant. Dietrich and Milland are simply wonderful in their roles, and Leisen's direction is subtle and clever. If the story lacks plausibility, who cares? This picture belongs to Dietrich and Milland and the wonderful authenticity they bring to their characters.
