Junai Monogatari AKA Story of Pure Love is about two poor youths, Mitsuko and Kando, rebelling against society in various ways, who are desperately trying to be together despite tortuous circumstances. The film depicts their lives as thieves, menial laborers who can get little pay, society outcasts, and of course, lovers. Junai Monogatari depicts, mostly, their struggles within the Japanese reformatory system and Mitsuko's worsening sickness.

The Story of Pure Love / Jun'ai monogatari (1957) [Re-UP]

Filmed in 1957, Tadashi Imai’s Junai Monogatari was released in the U.S. the following year as Story of a Pure Love. The title is tinged with irony: the young-lover protagonists (Hitomi Nakahara and Shinjiro Ebara) may be pure, but the society surrounding them is not. The heroine in particular is a victim of her environment, thrust into a girl’s reformatory where violence is the order of the day. To make matters worse, she is slowly dying of anemia, the result of the Hiroshima bombing of 1945.

… Though it was with this film that Richie accused Imai of being "more interested in propaganda than people," the sentimental love story is clearly the major focus (and one is struck by just how sentimental it is), and the class relations and system antagonism are a bit more subtle, and one is left with conflicting impressions concerning many of the characters. While Richie and Sato have made jabs at Imai, and his champion Mellen doesn't mention this specific film in her writings, I hope some here may find enjoyment out of it (especially if you're in the mood for a tearjerker!).
