Young Alan Parrish (Adam Hann-Byrd) discovered the ornate Jumanji board in 1969, when he was just twelve. When he sits down to play it for the first time with his reluctant friend Sarah (Laura Bell-Bundy), strange things immediately begin to happen. After Alan rolls a certain number on the dice, he is transported into the jungle realm of Jumanji, disappearing before Sarah's startled eyes. Because Sarah is too frightened to finish the game, Alan remains trapped in the rainforests of Jumanji for 26 years until two new children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), sit down to play the game in the attic of Alan's childhood home.

When the children roll the designated number that will free Alan, he pops back into a 38 year-old survivor (Robin Williams) of the all-too-real and all-too-deadly world of Jumanji. If Alan, Judy and Peter can find the now adult Sarah (Bonnie Hunt), they have a chance to finish the game – or risk that their house, neighborhood and hometown be taken over by the elephants, crocodiles, spiders and other denizens of the fascinating, seemingly unstoppable force called Jumanji … forever.

I remember I watched this movie a few years back. I always wanted to see the movie again, and I finally did that today. Strange that this movie has alway been on top of my mind…

This movie is amazing! It has everything; comedy, love, adventure.

Shortly after the movie started, your mind will be sucked into the story.

Great!

Jumanji (1995)

I have enjoyed Robin Williams's movies for many years. I now own several of his movies that I still enjoy watching. I recently decided to watch Jumanji again.

Alan Parrish, son of the richest man in town, was teased a lot and didn't have many friends. On a bad day, Alan discovered an interesting looking game called Jumanji. Later that evening he and his friend Sarah Whittle decided to play it. They quickly realized that it wasn't an ordinary game when strange things happened. Things got even worse when Alan was transported into the game.

Twenty-six years later, Judy and Peter Shepherd moved into the Parrish house with their aunt Nora. The kids were still dealing with the deaths of their parents. They found Jumanji and decided to skip school to play it. They managed to deal with the first few things that happened when Alan turned up. Alan wanted no part of the game at first, but he soon realized that he would have to play to finish the game that he and Sarah had started so many years before.

Jumanji (1995)

Jumanji was based on the children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. I've never read the book, but I did look through a copy several years ago. From what I remember, the story wasn't very long and was simpler, so things had to be added so that the movie wasn't too short. There was nothing about Peter and Judy moving to a new home with their aunt and I also don't remember Alan and Sarah being part of the story either. I did think those characters and the additional story elements worked well with the plot while keeping the main idea from the original book. Van Allsburg also wrote the books that the movies The Polar Express and Zathura were based on.

Jumanji started off showing how Alan was picked on, found the game, and had a disagreement with his father before deciding to play the game. That part of the movie did movie a bit slower which might bother some viewers. Those few scenes did help to better establish Alan as well as his relationship with his father. Things picked up for a few minutes when Sarah and Allan started playing the game. The pace did slow down again to introduce Peter and Judy before picking up again when they started the game. Once Alan and Sarah were introduced as adults and got back in the game, the pace picked up again for the rest of the movie. I never felt that things were rushed.

Jumanji (1995)

I first saw Jumanji many years ago. I think I saw it in the theater after it was first released. At the time, I thought the plot was very unique. The plot was interesting and had a few different things going on without being overly complex. There was a little bit of suspense in a few scenes without the movie being a suspenseful movie overall. I did think that certain aspects of the movie were predictable which might bother some viewers. I wasn't bothered by the predictable aspects of the story. Zathura also dealt with a game coming to life, so there are similarities between the movies even though the games in question were different types of games.

Jumanji was a fun, mostly family friendly adventure movie. Some of what happened could be too silly for some people, but I thought those things worked for the movie. There were several funny moment throughout the movie. It was rated PG, so there really wasn't anything objectionable in the movie. A few things might be scary to younger children, so parents should keep that in mind. The action scenes did help to keep things interesting. Several of things from those action scenes weren't realistic, so people need to be able to suspend their disbelief to fully enjoy the movie. Special effects were needed for everything that was going on to work properly. The special effects were used to show the different magical things connected to the game that happened, like when different animals came out of the game. The effects were done well for the time, though some of them look a bit dated now. There was only a little bit of minor violence in a few scenes, so people that don't care for violence in movies shouldn't have any issues with this one.

Jumanji (1995)

Alan was first shown as a child who was frequently picked on and had trouble connecting with his father. He was struggling to deal with several things when he found the game and ended up being sucked into it. He basically grew up alone in jungle of the game since he was stuck in the game for twenty-six years. He was very out of his element since everything had changed so much. Alan wanted no part of the game, but he became resolved once he realized that Peter and Judy had just joined the game he and Sarah started years before. Alan did go through some changes by the end of the movie. I thought Robin Williams handled the part well.

Sarah seemed to be Alan's only friend when the movie started even though they weren't really close. She was traumatized by what happened while playing the game, so she was not pleased to see the game again. She did seem to adjust to everything that was going on well. Sarah was a nice woman overall and she and Alan did have a connection that got stronger by the end of the movie. Bonnie Hunt was great in the part.

Peter and Judy were still dealing with the death of their parents when they arrived at the house with their aunt. They had their own ways of coping, like how Judy would tell elaborate stories about what happened to their parents. Peter and Judy were very close to each other. They were in much of the movie, but not much else was shared about them. Kirsten Dunst was fine as Judy. She was less annoying in this part than I have found her in some of her roles as an adult. Bradley Pierce was fine as Peter.

Alan's dad Samuel only turned up in a few scenes. He came across as strict and not that understanding. Samuel owned a shoe factory that seemed to provide most of the income for the town. Jonathan Hyde, who also played Hunter Van Pelt from the game, was fine in the part. Carol Anne, Alan's mother, was shown even less, so Patricia Clarkson really didn't have anything to do. Nora, Peter and Judy's aunt, turned up every so often. It was clear that she loved them and was trying to do her best to help them. She wasn't sure how to deal with certain things though. Bebe Neuwirth was fine in the part. Carl worked for Samuel when Alan was a child. He ended up in a very different job by the time Alan was an adult and he had to deal with a lot of wild things. David Alan Grier was good in the part.
