Hold Fast is the story of Michael, a smart and stubborn 14-year old from Newfoundland outports whose world is turned upside down when his parents die in a car crash. Michael is sent to live in a city far from his beloved fishing village. In trouble at school and in constant conflict with his hard-nosed Uncle Ted, Michael feels uprooted and unwanted. After he goes ballistic at school and knocks a kid out cold Michael vows to run away. His timid cousin Curtis begs to join him and together they set off on a quest for freedom and belonging, determined to prove they can survive on their own. Their journey into Newfoundland wilderness proves more revealing than either could have imagined.

The film explores the life of Michael, a smart and stubborn 14-year old teenager from small-town Newfoundland, whose life is suddenly uprooted when his parents die in a car accident. Moving from a remote, oceanside town to an unfamiliar environment creates a poignant tale of loss, human struggle, alienation and ultimately the transition from childhood to adulthood.

The film has a major focus on place, with all scenes being shot entirely on the island of Newfoundland — in and around St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Bauline, Tors Cove, La Manche Provincial Park and Gros Morne National Park.

Hold Fast is an intrinsic piece of Newfoundland’s cultural heritage. The landscape is featured so prominently that it too becomes like another character. It is a story about human conflict, but also contrasts, such as the gap between outport life and life in the city. A common theme in the story also asks the universal question “Who am I?”, which is married with the other question “Where do I belong?”, which is really about Newfoundland as a very specific, unique place in the world.
