The Glauber Rocha Collection presents the restored versions four classics of the Glauber Rocha filmography in double-DVDs with almost ten hours of extra videos, including interviws, trailers, archives, sets of documentaries narrated in first person by the “voices of Glauber” recreating the context where each film was conceived and shown, as well as the dialogue that the author kept with the contemporary production. An indispensable collection for the fans of cinema and the Brazilian culture.

Glauber Rocha is a Brazilian avant-garde director who made many movies that explore Brazil, its politics or history. He also adopted his unique approach for other locations such as Rome and Africa. One trademark is the heavy use of folk and traditional music and dance, using long scenes of complete performances and songs to express a culture. He increasingly used actors as allegories, symbols and archetypes, often using strangely mythical characters to represent the poor, the rich, the politician, the corrupted power, the good spiritual guides, the warped church, and the saint. Religious influences and political polemics deliver heavy notes in his movies, and he uses theatrics, emotions and symbols to present a viewpoint rather than a narrative, pure ideas or artsy abstractions. His archetype actors act out dramatically, using body language, behaviour, visual symbols, histrionics, song or poetry to convey a single idea or viewpoint, after which the movie moves on to the next presentation. This use of avant-garde theatrics increased with time until it reached the over-the-top approach of Carmelo Bene. Most of his works consist of obvious symbolism and theatrics with the occasional touch of surrealism, and only the strangest movies are included here.

In the State of Bahia, Brazil, an educated black man returns to his home fishing village to try and free people from mysticism, in particular the Candomblé religion, which he considers a factor of political and social oppression, with tragic outcome.

IMDB

The zealous shit-stirrer returning to his Bahia home might be Glauber Rocha himself, machete in one hand and Godard’s review of Black Orpheus in the other. Eisenstein (by way of Emilio Fernandez) is the major influence, "the passivity of those who expect a godly kingdom" the main target. Tropical approximations of La Terra Trema comprise the setting, the white-suited activist (Antonio Pitanga) arrives from the city so bursting with radical ideas that authorities have to come up with a new expression: "elemento subversivo." Overflowing with glistening chiaroscuro and blasting sunlight, the beachfront village is no idyll but rather a self-devouring circle of ignorance and exploitation, its cracks papered over with continuous candomblé pirouettes. (The Sea Goddess and the Boss-Man are roughly on the same pedestal.) Progress and awareness become a matter of sabotage, the fishermen’s great nets are slashed while the temptress (Luiza Maranhгo) seduces the callow stud (Aldo Teixeira) whose purity is said to protect the community. The turning wind strikes, the agitator gets to the central revelation ("The master is a slave!"). The first of Rocha’s shuddering lands in anguish, half-celebrating, half-purging its African-Brazilian panorama via an exhaustive panoply of Kino-fists. Choreographed neo-realism and cock-eyed montage (lovemaking by the shore, sacrificial chicken blood), utter contempt for any pictorialism that hasn’t been grained and defaced, a free-floating soundtrack of chants, drumbeats and scratches – political idleness as bogus paradise, cinema as necessary cyclone. Subsequently disowned by the filmmaker (too much "straight" narrative?), but nonetheless an essential bedrock for his demolishing camera-eye. With Lucy de Carvalho and Lidio Silva. In black and white.

Entranced Earth (Portuguese: Terra em Transe) is a 1967 Brazilian drama film directed by Glauber Rocha. It was entered into the 1967 Cannes Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI Award.
Eldorado, a fictitious country in Latin America, is sparkling with the internal struggle for political power. In the eye of this social convulsion, the jaded journalist Paulo Martins opposes two equally corrupt political candidates: a pseudopopulist and a conservative. In this context, Paulo is torn between the madness of the elite and the blind submission of the masses. But, in this complex tropical reality, nothing really is what it seems to be.

IMDB

Earth Entranced (Terra em Transe) is certainly the most controversial film of Brazilian auteur Glauber Rocha’s output, and remains one of the most confrontational pieces of work in global cinema. Rocha was the key figure of the Brazilian Cinema Novo movement, a movement that has come to be known as the archetypal Third Cinema. So while people may talk about the ideological conflicts in the West during the 1960s, what went on in Paris, San Francisco etc. seems like a first-year university student picking up Das Kapital for the first time when compared to the tumult in Latin America. Few countries, including Brazil, escaped conflict and bloodshed. And while Brazil’s conflicts weren’t so violent, there were a number of highly traumatic changes, such as the sudden 1964 coup which overthrew the leftist government of João Goulart.

Film, like all art, found itself in the middle of this. And while the original Cinema Novo movement started off based on Italian neo-realism and the French Nouvelle Vague, the sudden shift in the social climate fostered a cinema that was integrally a part of and fundamentally opposed to the social change. As the powers that be became increasingly authoritarian, the filmmakers were forced to become more and more symbolic and coded. Consequently, it is almost impossible to read a Brazilian Cinema Novo film without ever considering the social context, and it’s certainly important to consider it when looking at Earth Entranced.

Period piece about a Brazil that is no more. This movie is the sequel to "God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun" (Deus e o diabo na terra do sol), and takes place 29 years after Antonio das Mortes killed Corisco (the "Blond Devil"), last of the Cangaceiros. In "the old days", Antonio's function in life was exterminate these bandits, on account of his personal grudges against them. His life had been meaningless for the last 29 years, but now, a new challenge awaits him. When a Cangaceiro appears in Jardim Das Piranhas, the local Land Baron (Jofre Soares), an old man, does what seems obvious to him: he calls Antonio das Mortes, killer of Cangaceiros. At first, Antonio is ecstatic. His life has gained new meaning. But soon it becomes obvious that this new Cangaceiro (named Coirana) is no Corisco, but an idealist. An idealist of the sixties in the garb of the forties…

IMDB

Powerful political film, with mercenary do Valle tracking down insurgents, killing all the members of one band and dispatching the leader in hand-to-hand combat in a wild bullet-ridden finale, only to discover his real sympathies are with the rebels. Clearly indebted to the directors of France's New Wave, Rocha would make greater films; nevertheless, ANTONIO DAS MORTES survives as a landmark in Brazil's emergent Cinema Novo by one of its finest filmmakers. Brazil's lush vegetation, mountains, and plains are beautifully photographed in this polemic, which lionizes the likes of revolutionary Che Guevara while indicting the cruel and impersonal landlords of a South American dictatorship.

The Age of the Earth (Portuguese: A Idade da Terra), is an 1980 avant-garde film directed by Glauber Rocha.
In the blurb from Tate Modern, the film is described as thus: "Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni claimed of The Age of Earth that ‘each scene is a lesson in how modern cinema should be made.’ After stints in Cuba, the United States and Europe, in 1980 Rocha returned to Brazil to make the film, which was his last. This monumental culmination of his career is an urgent ‘anti-symphony’ intended to reinvent Brazilian cinema. Originally, the 16 reels of the film were to be presented in a random order. The frenzied feast of allegories and symbols defied rational reality and sought to ‘resist the classification of colonial anthropology’."

IMDB

"Idade…" is one of the last films to "believe" in avant-garde, experimental, uncompromising art films (as opposed to the omnipresent sense of commercialism we witness today, even from beginning filmmakers). It's from the days when films with political statements and philosophical discussions were welcome and relevant, when intellectual complexity was a plus and not "boring stuff". "Idade…" doesn't strive to be coherent, logical, accessible, entertaining: Glauber wants to provoke bewilderment and discomfort – and he certainly succeeds. It's a film of excesses: it's overlong, overly repetitive, overly digressive. It's a loud film from a loud man who didn't believe in subtlety. Glauber didn't even bother to write down his voice-over comments in "Idade…": he goes on and on ad libbing, thinking out loud in messianic speeches that are alternately lucid and maddeningly over the top. His famous inability to be succinct – both in films and real life – pays a price in his last film and it's no wonder that, by the end of the movie, we feel exhausted.

This is a film for audiences not afraid of experimentalism and controversy – it's mandatory viewing for all interested in Glauber Rocha and as perhaps the last breath of Brazilian "Cinema Novo" movement. DO NOT watch this if you like conventional story-telling, clarity and subtlety. For the curious, open-minded, patient viewer, trust me: you've never seen a film quite like this.
