French Sex Murders (1972) [Mondo Macabro]
DVD5 | VIDEO_TS | NTSC 16:9 | Cover | 01:28:33 | 4,12 Gb
Audio: English AC3 1.0 @ 448 Kbps | Subs: English when needed
Genre: Horror, Thriller

This gory sex thriller stars a galaxy of Eurocult acting talent. Anita Ekberg (The Killer Nun); Howard Vernon (Awful Dr Orloff); Rosalba Neri (Lady Frankenstein)… not to mention hunky Gordon Mitchell, sexy Barbara Bouchet and glamorous Evelyn Kraft. Oh - and professional Humphrey Bogart lookalike Robert Sacchi!

To match its sparkling cast, the film boasts a suitably wild plot. It features hooded killers, mad scientists, an eyeball thief and some of the sleaziest murders seen in a long time. Set in and around a Paris brothel, the action is as hot and steamy as you could wish for.

Never previously available on DVD, this wild and whacky cult favourite includes startling gore effects created by Oscar winner Carlo Rimbaldi of ET fame!

IMDB

Copycats! Copycats! We always have and always will have to deal with them, especially when it comes to the wild and wonderful world of the cinema. If a film makes money, rest assured that a slew of quickly produced copycats will follow right on its heels. Even to this day it happens, and it'll continue to happen as long as films are being made. Apparently, producer Dick Randall built an entire career on this premise. If somebody else did it, why can't I? Slasher films, exploitation films of all shapes and sizes and in the case of The French Sex Murders, the giallo/murder mystery.

French Sex Murders (1972)

The giallo however tends to be a touchy subject with fans and these copyctas are often sore spots for some. There are those who will only enjoy the true classics (or at least titles that are commonly regarded as classics) and these folks tend to steer away from the 'so-called' guilty pleasures. This is all fine and good and then let it be known that this is NOT a giallo for these people. If you are however, like me and enjoy a fine euro cult copycat because of some of the stars, specific scenes or even just a certain kind of feeling that's like 'home' - then this one's definitely for you. Originality and sense of reason be dammed!

French Sex Murders (1972)

While running from the law a young man named Antoine (Pietro Martellanza), stops by his favorite brothel for a little R&R. Madame Collette (Anita Ekberg), reluctantly allows him to share some time with one of his favorite working girls named Francine (played by ultra hottie Barbara Bouchet). We soon find that Madame Collette's reluctance is held for good reason. In a rage, Antoine (completely naked) slaps the complete crap out of Francine (while in a delicious red pair of bra and panties) and hightails it out of there…a short time later, Francine is found dead. Number one suspect Antoine is captured and sentenced to death. He proclaims his innocence and vows revenge. He manages to escape and evades the police for a short time (through a few poorly executed chase scenes)…that is until he's finally decapitated while riding is motorcycle. Antoine may be gone, but the murders in and around the brothel continue. Is this a ghostly vengeance? Or is someone else entirely responsible?

Red Herring Alert, Red Herring Alert! Sexy dames and crazy doctors are on the loose in Paris!

French Sex Murders (1972)

What's so great about the film then, you ask? Well, it's not originality or style, that's for sure. So I'll tell you what it is. It's a great line up of euro cult faves including - Anita Ekberg, Barbara Bouchet, Rosalba Neri, Howard Vernon (as Dr. Waldemar) and cute as a button Evelyn Kraft (Waldemar's daughter), to name a few. It's the fact that the film still manages to remain sexy and holds onto whatever element of class it can, through its brief running time. The film is brisk and never overstays its welcome, offering up a solid 90-minutes of pure entertainment cheese. Nothing more and nothing less. Most of all, it's fun. The film is fun, and in this case, that's enough for me. What the film lacks in originality and style, it surely makes up for in entertainment value, and this is probably what I appreciated about it most.

French Sex Murders (1972)

Keep in mind; many of these faces are not given excessive amounts of screen time. However, they are given ample time to either ham it up or show it off. Plenty of sexy euro babes amidst a serial killer on the loose. Sure, we'd like to see Ms. Bouchet given more screen time than a bit part at the start and end of the film, but still, when she's there she shines, as do the others. This is not an exemplary piece of filmmaking to show off these talents and why we love them so. It's a fun piece of fluff that caters well to the euro-cult fan, featuring plenty of familiar faces as a bonus.

French Sex Murders (1972)

No scratch that, what I liked most about this film is the inexplicable choice in casting Robert Sacchi as Inspector Pontaine. Sacchi looks and plays the part of Humphrey Bogart, literally. You'd think he leapt right out of The Big Sleep and into The French Sex Murders. It's quite comical, and you probably wouldn't even expect it to be anything but annoying, as I'm sure some will attest to. For me however, it was a fun and cool diversion from the all too familiar story being played out.

French Sex Murders (1972)

In order to pull together this version of the film (longest to date apparently) Mondo Macabro had to pull from a few sources. What does this mean exactly? Quality will vary a bit and some scenes feature French Subs, because they were never translated to English. Still, Mondo Macabro is to be commended on pulling this release together, obviously catering it to fans of Euro cinema. While video quality may not remain consistent, overall the anamorphic 1.66:1 image is still quite pleasing, along with the mono audio as well. The dub job gets pretty silly quite often, not that we'd necessarily expect any less.

Extras are most impressive, in line with MM's previous releases. We'll start off with the comprehensive still and press material galleries, which is followed by an extremely informative text essay written by Pete Tombs. Pete discusses the history of the film, multiple versions and title changes. All of which lead up to Mondo Macabro's compiled print. Next up are two alternate scenes, both quite interesting and of varied quality. Most impressive though is a 30+ minute piece on producer Dick Randall entitled The Wild, Wild World of Dick Randall. Speaking to family and colleagues, this informative piece paints the picture of a true theatrical showman…or a thief, depending on how you look at it! Either way, it's a great extra and tremendous way to round out another really fun release from Mondo Macabro. Hats off to the boys over at MM, for a very entertaining and highly recommended DVD release.
