Bursting with idealism, Melanie Pröschle, a young teacher from the countryside, starts her first job at a high school in the city. Desperate to fulfil her hopes, Melanie intends to do everything the right way. Politely she introduces herself to her neighbours with homemade schnapps. At her first day of school she gives a very ambitious speech for her colleagues. She wants to be a "fresh breeze" to the school, but it is not easy to start a new life, as Melanie copes with loneliness, established teachers and ninth grade students.

The Forest for the Trees (2003)

I had borrowed this film from a local library and now I am seeking to find a copy for my collection of films which are overlooked and have that true to life feel. As someone that has reached an age and hopefully taste requiring my selection of films hit a nerve of believability. When the main character, a school teacher, is assigned to work in her first job, I was completely drawn to her performance. I could easily say that one will also find everything about her effort to deal with her students and coworkers a very personal experience eliciting a connection in life. For myself this is what a successful film does and so I am eagerly adding this to my collection.

The Forest for the Trees (2003)

It's not hard to see why The Forest For The Trees has been such a success on the festival circuit. This tartly comic tale of teachers on the verge of a nervous breakdown is not only Maren Ade's marvellous first feature, it was her film school graduation piece. In following first-time teacher Melanie (Eva Löbau) and her disastrous attempts at forging both a new career and social life, Ade demonstrates more maturity and insight than many other, more experienced directors.
The Forest for the Trees (2003)

German director Maren Ade’s The Forest for the Trees was shot on video and submitted as her film school graduation feature, before going on to win several prizes at film festivals. Initially the ultra-low-budget look of the film is off-putting (it looks like it was shot on an old-fashioned VHS camera), however it’s a testament to both the acting and the direction that you soon become completely immersed in the story.

The Forest for the Trees (2003)

Eva Löbau’s performance is terrific – she’s utterly heart-breaking as she tries to put a brave face on being rejected. There’s also strong support from Daniela Holtz and from Jan Neumann as Thorsten, a nerdy teacher who asks her out. In addition, the film features an astonishing final scene that is weirdly beautiful and deeply upsetting at the same time.

The Forest for the Trees (2003)

In short, The Forest for the Trees is an engaging, moving and ultimately devastating portrayal of loneliness with a superb central performance from Eva Löbau. Highly recommended and well worth seeking out.
The Forest for the Trees (2003)

The first few minutes of the film, i couldn't get over the 30fps video hand-held format. I was thinking, "are they crazy? at least shoot 24p…" But soon enough, the story sucked me into Melanie's plight settling into a new environment, struggling with loneliness, desperation, and upholding her facade of "everything is fine," when everyone knows that she is physically and emotionally deteriorating. I thought that the acting was superb. Not once did I feel like the actors were acting, but the video format and the emotions elicited conveyed a painful sense of realism.

The Forest for the Trees (2003)

This film touches upon a universal struggle of the human condition in such a realistic, frustrating, and true-to-life approach. Her inner tug of war is something that all of us have experienced at one point or another to some degree of severity.

It is truly a touching story.

I haven't felt such pity, frustration, empathy, and genuine identification with the protagonist in a long time.

Find this film and go see it.
