On March 12, 1956, Basque Nationalist Jesús de Galíndez Suarez disappears from his apartment in New York, never heard from again. He had been working with the FBI and was about to publish a book critical of Dominican strongman, Trujillo. In 1988, a graduate student, Muriel Colber, wants to make Galíndez the subject of her dissertation. She's in Spain doing research; finding little, she goes to Santo Domingo. At every turn, the CIA, in the person of agent Robards, tries to thwart her; and, at each turn, as she considers abandoning the project, someone offers new information, often contradictory. She wants the truth behind the Galíndez mystery; will she find it?

Gerardo Herrero's political drama El Misterio Galíndez (The Galindez File) uses the real life 1956 disappearance of Spanish political refugee Jesus de Galindez as its subject. Saffron Burrows plays a privileged college girl named Muriel who travels to Spain in order to finish her doctoral thesis about political rebellion; Galindez is the main focus of her work. With the help of a pair of locals (Guillermo Toledo and Txema Blasco), she learns that Galindez was publicly critical of the Dominican Republic's political leaders who may have been responsible for his death. Muriel eventually travels to Miami in order to uncover the truth. She is opposed throughout her search by an FBI agent (Harvey Keitel) who wants keep the truth hidden as it would reveal unpleasant facts about the United States' role in his disappearance. The film was screened at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival.

Muriel Colber, una joven norteamericana, está escribiendo su tesis sobre Jesús de Galíndez, un vasco afincado en Estados Unidos tras la guerra civil. Representante del PNV en el exilio, Galíndez desapareció sin dejar rastro tras sufrir un extraño secuestro en Nueva York en 1956. La investigación de Muriel no hace más que alimentar su curiosidad; e intuye que está descubriendo uno de esos cadáveres molestos, que todos los gobiernos guardan con celo en sus armarios. Adaptación de la novela del recientemente fallecido Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, y con toda seguridad la mejor película de Gerardo Herrero. La película se inscribe en la tradición de películas de periodistas que descubren que las más altas instancias del poder están podridas. Se desarrolla así la hipótesis de la conspiración de altos vuelos, en la que colaboraron el dictador Trujillo, de Santo Domingo, con la CIA. Seis países, incluido España, coproducen el film. Entre los actores internacionales están la protagonista, Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea, Miss Julie), y Harvey Keitel, en un típico papel suyo de siniestro agente de la CIA. Entre los hispanos, Eduard Fernández da vida a Galíndez, y Guillermo Toledo al novio hispano de Muriel.
