Activism, direct observation, and situational documentary inconspicuously linger about the constantly delayed construction of the D8 motorway. Local residents, a Brno-based activist and the construction chief shatter the clichés of contemporary documentary film – among other things in who we should root for. The local mixes with the global just like economics and the environment. A beautiful shot of the north Bohemian countryside, set to Wagner’s Tannhäuser. But the viewer intuitively senses that these superficial aesthetics hide a no less forceful sense of irony and doubt.

‘This is ridiculous. They have wrought havoc left and right, but they spared this little chapel here, just to show us how much they cared. Why couldn’t they spare the environment too?’ says the activist.

‘You care for beetles and bugs, but what about the people? Today, one is better off as a ring snake than as a human! You are not even from around here, so you haven’t got a clue about what’s going on,’ says the resident.

‘It’s just the fault of those damned activists with their obsession for a healthy environment. No healthy environment is possible in this society,’ says the builder.

Even after many years, the few remaining kilometres of the highway from Prague to Berlin, which pass through the protected area of the Bohemian Central Uplands, cannot be completed. Activism, apathy, bureaucracy, Tannhäuser and spectacular camerawork come together to tell the absurdist story of the D8. Could a motorway that makes everybody happy ever possibly be built?
