Filmmaker Andrei Dascalescu presents a moving true-life love story in this documentary. Constantin and Elena are a couple living in a small Romanian village who have been married for fifty-five years. Over the course of their lives together, Constantin and Elena have seen war, political upheaval and disasters of all sorts, but they're still together and still in love, even if time has taken a toll on them. Moving slower than they did in their youth, the couple still wakes each morning, helping one another with the chores and continuing their work making tapestries. If there's a dark cloud on their horizon, it's the simple knowledge that at their age they have only so long left together, and while both Constantin and Elena hardly welcome their mortality, they've come to see it as an inevitability that need not be feared while looking back on the adventures they've shared together. Dascalescu captured the couple's daily routine on film, and in Constantin and Elena he's crafted a simple but affecting tale of how they've stayed in love against long odds for more than half a century. Constantin and Elena was an official selection at the 2009 Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, where it received the "First Appearance Award."

The author follows with his quiescent camera his grandparents over a year. Whatever was judged film-worthy is shown to us, in a beautifully woven montage, much like Elena's colorful tapestries.

The way this perennially happy couple interacts is peacefully engaging. We get to listen to their church songs, watch them perform their daily chores, talk about the lies on TV and enjoy a can of pop for the first time.

Though intimate and revealing, we get the feeling that some important events were left out. I found out in the Q&A at the end of the North American premiere that the death of their youngest son took place while the film was being shot. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why death features prominently in their conversation.

A Romanian poet has said that "Eternity was born in the Village". Time certainly passes more slowly in that part of the world, but it's still too fast when the movie is over.
