Marvelous performance by Dekker as the villainous Dr Cyclops - as bald as Lorre's Dr Gogol and going blind behind his pebble glasses, hence the echo of Homer's Polyphemus in his name and his ultimate fate - who lurks in the Amazonian jungle conducting experiments in which he shrinks people to manikin size. An engaging fantasy with brilliantly executed (though mostly rather unimaginative) special effects which look back to The Devil Doll and forward to The Incredible Shrinking Man. Let down by a dull supporting cast, but retrieved by the attractively pale, tremulous Technicolor.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

It never fails to amaze me when people make short, thoughtless comparisons between the films of yesterday and the films of today. Good films transcend time, regardless of what technical achievements have since been invented, and Dr. Cyclops is just that…a good film. Sure it has outmoded special effects, but those special effects were once highly praised for their uniqueness and creativity.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

Those special effects were a springboard to other achievements in that technical area. Let's give credit where credit is due and praise this film not for having outmoded effects BUT for having special effects which revolutionized film effects. Enough sermonizing… I know how little good it does.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

This film tells the story of a mad, a very mad scientist that has discovered the ability to miniaturize things, animals, and even people. Albert Dekker plays easily his finest role as the demented Dr. Cyclops with a real bad sight problem. Dekker's performance is not like your typical raving madman(aka a Lugosi or even early Karloff performance) but more of a subdued evil and obsessive nature. The other actors are adequate and the special effects are wonderful.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

The film has a good story and I loved the obvious allusion to the mythological Polyphemus, a giant with all the advantages taken "down" by a small, yet brilliant man. This is a thoughtful, interesting, and fun film. Definitely keep more than one eye open when viewing this film!

Horror

Starts off with six boisterous US soldiers (including Richard Long and David Janssen) who are caught sneaking into the temple to watch a cult of cobra-worshippers, who reputedly have turned women into cobras and vice-versa. After they return to the States, they begin dying one by one, and it's all seemingly tied to the appearance of a mysterious beauty (Faith Domergue). Domergue is an awesome enough reason to indulge and it flows quite smoothly with an expected conclusion. Great fun!

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

Set in 1945, six American GIs crash a snake-worshipping cult, and are threatened to be killed, one by one, for their misdeeds. The setup is a bit long (about 15 minutes), but once they get back to New York City, the excitement begins.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

Faith Domergue is amazingly beautiful, and most alluring, as a faux Asian "Cobra Woman", an instrument of death. Despite his third billing in the film, Marshall Thompson is her co-star, giving a strong performance as the GI who falls for her, and proves her ruin. He and the rest of the cast, Richard Long, William Reynolds, Jack Kelly and David Janssen, became more successful as television stars.

Dr. Cyclops (1940) + Cult of the Cobra (1955)

Kathleen Hughes is also on hand as a pretty blonde love interest. Not much is made to recreate the era, it's definitely 1955, via the clothes, makeup, hairstyles, etc. And when Domergue is transformed back to a human, she's fully clothed! But as in most of Universal-International's decade of sci-fi/horror classics, which hold up better (and are re-shown on Cable and released to DVD/video) than their other output, save a few Douglas Sirk dramas, it's well-written, photographed, scored, paced and acted.
