The music is sharp and the look is sensual, but the characterisation falls disappointingly flat in this animated take on the old A Star Is Born tale.

A tune on the radio takes old ivory-tinkler Chico back to 1948 and the night he first clapped eyes on Rita, the most sultry chanteuse in Havana. Personally and professionally, they make sweet music. For a while.

Eventually the combination of passion, ambition and jealousy sees Rita lured to New York by a smooth-talking Svengali. The remorseful Chico follows later with his friend and manager Ramon.

But while Rita's star rises from Broadway to Hollywood and beyond, Chico is just another pianist on the unpredictable jazz circuit.

Occasionally they meet, as star-crossed lovers do. Unfortunately Chico is so drab it's difficult to care whether the relationship stays off or on. And since we meet him as a lonely old man, it's obviously been off for some time.

Rita could also do with a touch of charisma to go with her Sade-meets-Jessica Rabbit style. But as she's passed from one stereotypical white mogul to another, it becomes clear that this is an adult animation populated with cartoons.

The central relationship is crying out for more bite. But Chico and Rita are no Ike and Tina. Ay carumba, they're about as dynamic as Peters and Lee.

Thankfully, there's plenty of colour to enjoy in the scenery. Simply drawn yet full of detail, the post-war streets of Havana, New York, Paris and Las Vegas offer a wealth of animated riches.

And with jazz greats from Thelonius Monk and Dizzy Gillespie to Cole Porter and Tito Puente laying down licks on the soundtrack, there's much aural enjoyment for aficionados and novices alike.

Visually and musically: smokin'. Dramatically: no cigar.

Chico & Rita is a sublime and highly original animated film. It is a very adult film with some animated adult situations. It is set in Cuba just before and the years after the revolution. It tells the story of Chico, a talented jazz pianist and Rita, a beautiful singer. Through the story of this couple's turbulent love affair over these years, where Rita finds fame and fortune in US and Chico goes through some hard times, we also get a brief history of both Cuba and jazz music. The animation is wonderfully evocative and colorful and as for the music; well if you are a fan of jazz or Latin American music you are going to fall in love with this movie. Highly recommended.
