Rupert Everett (MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING) stars as Francesco Dellamorte, a cemetery watchman whose job is to slaughter the living dead when they rise hungry from their graves. But following a tragic tryst with a lusty young widow (stunning Anna Falchi in one of three sexy roles), Francisco begins to ponder the mysteries of existence. Is there long-term satisfaction in blasting the skulls of ‘returners’? Will his imbecile assistant find happiness with the partial girl-corpse of his dreams? And if death is the ultimate act of love, can a psychotic killing spree send Dellamorte to the brink of enlightenment? Italian horror master Michele Soavi (STAGE FRIGHT) directed this brilliantly bloody black comedy — also known as DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE — that Gore Score calls "a deliciously demented, delightfully surreal stew of sex, death, splatter, male-bonding, barfing, zombies and nothing less than the Ultimate Meaning of Life!"

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

"Dellamorte Dellamore" begins like a fun B-horror movie telling us of the care-taker of th Buffalora cemetery, Francesco Dellamorte. In the cemetery some dead people come back to life 7 days after burial, but, Dellamorte isn't too bothered by this, he just takes it as part of his job to put the dead back in the ground, answering his door with a gun in hand, ready to dispense some Grim Reaper-type justice. But, within the first three minutes we know from the visual complexity of the film that this won't be just any B-horror movie, and within the first ten minutes we get a glimpse of what is to come - a fascinating meditation on the difference (if any) between life and death, a philosophical look at insanity and loneliness, a recurring love story that grows more bizarre with each telling, and eventually a big old representation about how life is just what we make of it.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

The dead returning and the whole zombie thing is just a doorway into Dellamorte's world. Fortunately, it never takes itself too seriously, if it had it would be a dull bore, but thankfully Romoli throws in lots of wit and dark humor ("I'd give my life to be dead"), and Soavi never lets us get bored with his always moving, floating camera and elaborate but never over-done sets.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

Everett gives one of the best performances in film history because it is so subtle, he delivers his lines with just the right amount of sarcasm, cynicism, and un-emotionalism (is that a word?) to pull off what was probably an incredibly difficult performance - but he does it perfectly. Francois Hadji-Lazaro, playing Dellamorte's mute and retarded assistant manages to build more of a character with his simple one word vocab of "Nyah" and his facial expressions than most big over-done actors/actresses in movies now-a-days.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

Anna Falchi is mainly there to provide mysteriously beautiful looks, which she does, in all three of her roles and all of her many lives and unlives. Soavi was the protogé of Italian horror-stylist Dario Argento, but in "Dellamorte Dellamore" he comes fully into his own with his own bizarre and incredible style. This isn't just a case of the student copying the teacher, in this case the student might have even surpassed the master. Ah, if only you could see one movie this life time.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

Hip, scary, funny, sexy, gory and weird, this is one of the best cult films ever. As a horror film, it will only appeal to the off-beat. There are some truly beautiful moments in the pic as well. In fact, it's probably the most beautiful horror film of its kind since Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu." One scene is obviously lifted from the gorgeous painting "The Lovers" by the Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte (1898-1967), who I'm sure would have been honored to have been associated with this exploitation film.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

Everett stars as the cemetery man, a 24-hour grave keeper who falls deeply in love with a supermodel-esque babe (played by supermodel Falci) who shows up to bury her husband one day.

The totally hot chick falls for him too naturally, and it isn't long before the two are boinking on her husband's grave.

Meanwhile, the cemetery man has another issue to contend with: For some unknown reason the dead have been coming back to life in his graveyard. When his new girlfriend's deceased husband shows up and apparently kills her, he isn't sure what to do: Blow her brains out when she comes back from the grave or keep loving her?

And when a group of bikers crash into a local school bus, killing everyone involved, he also has to prepare for all-out war with the living dead when dozens of freshly buried corpses all rise from their tombs at once.

He can't get help from the government. Local officials threaten to fire him when he raises the issue of zombies in the graveyard because they fear bad publicity would hurt the local economy.

Cemetery Man / Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) [Re-UP]

The film gets stranger and stranger, eventually transforming itself from a cheesy, but entertaining zombie movie into a surreal, deep examination of frustrated desire that reaches beyond the grave. Critics were universally favorable about this film upon its release to arthouses around the country.

In short, see this movie. There's never been anything quite like it.
