Belle toujours occurred to me unexpectedly and, as I had the will to pay my tribute to Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière, I was happy to have found a way to do so, perhaps the best, and I started working. What is it about? Taking two of the strange characters from the film Belle de Jour, and make them relive, thirty eight years later, in the strangeness of a secret which was only in the possession of the masculine character and a knowledge that had become crucial to the female character. Thus, passed this time, they meet again. She tries to avoid him by all means. But he stalks her and eventually manages to gain her attention with the intention of revealing the secret that he alone can unfold. They set a meeting, a dinner, where she expects that all will be revealed. During dinner, she, now a widow, awaits the expected revelation: what he had told her husband while he was mute and paralytic because of a gunshot wound fired by a lover of hers. The situation is tense and she ends up in despair without being able to find out what in truth happened. He is satisfied in his sadism and in his particular revenge from the ways of that woman, who deep down desired him but whose haughty ways never allowed him to possess her.

For those both familiar and unfamiliar with filmmaker Luis Buñuel and co-screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere's 1967 classic Belle de Jour, Manoel de Oliveira's Belle Toujours, an emphatic homage to both men as an opening title proclaims, works as standalone magic. Tottering somewhere between the surreal and the highly personal, this enchantingly melancholic French-Portuguese co-production grabs the psyche like a haunting poem or strange vision.

Not that de Oliveira's brave sequel won't polarize viewers. For all those art-house fans who go "Wow!", others may give a great big "Huh?"

Belle Toujours brings back Belle de Jour's enigmatic and sexually mischievous Husson and his prey, Séverine, the bourgeois housewife turned covert prostitute. The film picks up these characters and their story 40 years later in a contemporary but traditional Paris of noble stone buildings and elegant spaces.

Husson (Michel Piccoli) spots Séverine (Bulle Ogier) at a concert and follows her. But the woman, obviously wealthy and uninterested in renewing the aborted liaison, eludes the gentleman. Determined, Husson stalks her and chats up a barman and hotel concierge to learn her whereabouts.

The two meet by chance and Séverine accepts Husson's invitation to dine with him in his haute-gothic quarters. (It's never clear whether the dinner–including many candelabras and waiters–takes place in a hotel or apartment.) Barely a word is spoken, so it's the sounds of dishware, utensils and glasses that dominate the evening. What we do learn is that Séverine has accepted the invitation only in the hope of learning the final words Husson whispered to her betrayed husband so many years ago.

But at meal's end nothing is revealed, although Husson does give Séverine a gift, the buzzing box that figured in the earlier film. Again, the source of the buzz remains a secret, although the item emerges as a fine metaphor for all we cannot know about life.

While Séverine is also an unknown, she appears defeated by the past. Not so Husson. He may have a drinking problem but has come to terms with aging and is doing that gracefully, in spite of too many double whiskeys. He is still playful and capable of simple pleasures, such as those a classical concert or lively conversation might provide.

Besides Piccoli's engaging performance, it is the film's style that works wonders. De Oliviera favors long takes, a largely immobile camera, and frequent insertions featuring static long shots of a nocturnal, glittering Paris bathed in the romantic music of Dvorak's Eighth Symphony.

It is less the plot than the deliberate pacing and technique that convey the film's mystery and coax thoughts of aging, sexuality and mortality. Thus, Belle Toujours, more pensive than its kinky predecessor, provides a strange, original cinematic trip that belies the simplicity of its story.
