Csöre, the seven-year-old orphan, is maltreated by her foster-parents. They punish her severely for every tiny mistake she makes. Csöre runs away and an other family adopt her, nevertheless she is abused more than ever before.

A 7 year old orphan girl is kept by a peasant family on the Hungarian steppe in perhaps the 1930s. She’s treated like dirt – they won’t even give her any clothes. She runs around naked for the first half hour, getting regularly abused, beaten, raped or tortured. It’s all about the little girl’s resilience as her bewilderment and dismay mount, unable to understand or accept the way she is being treated. This is extremely moving; the performance by the girl is terrific. She runs away – almost getting adopted by a nice couple – but ends up in the care of an even more murderously neurotic woman. There’s a sense of repetition there which is unfortunate – the film (from a well-known Hungarian novel) might have been worked into a more rounded narrative and denouement. Still, it’s a transporting and Tolstoyan experience to watch the frail light of innocence guttering in such wretchedness.
