Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are outraged that Karl has written off the Seven Wonders claiming they're "all a bit s**t" having never seen any of them with his own eyes. They've thrown down the gauntlet to send him around the globe to force him out of his comfort zone. Stephen wants the experience to broaden Karl's mind and change his outlook on the world. Ricky wants Karl to hate every minute of it for his own amusement.

Despatched on what many would term a journey of a lifetime, the 'little Englander' will be putting his misgivings to one side as Karl finds out for himself what the fuss is about. He will travel to the Great Wall of China, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Petra in Jordan, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Meanwhile Gervais and Merchant will be keeping a watchful eye from London, monitoring every step of Pilkington's journey.

just do not sell me travelling. Best thing I have in my comfort zone is comfort. This is the one travel show that makes me want to go outside my comfort zone. It is real.

The show has got nothing to do with wanting to learn more. Whatever seinfeld or larry David-like travel show resemblance englishman can make, this one is bloody close. I love karl to a certain extent, one because he is easy to understand. Ricky is a little bit hard in his movies, and the accent too much in the office uk. However karl does not have hatred that ricky has, there is a little bit of shallowness on him but anyway lovable. I do hate it when he tries to be a proper travel show. that is irritating since I want to know what he thinks when he sees this stuff, not the thing i can read off wikipedia or tabloids Sunday.

Lastly, I do think that the best part of the show is the bit where the three of them talk together. It works best. I love the preview show and the ending hour long show. I do hope the show goes for a second season, maybe a proper holiday in more proper places like the us, japan, parts of the rich world but put him in crap places hostels and other stuff. after all the show is called an idiot abroad anyway, run with it then. The show has bad review, does not stop me from having a laugh anyway. Thank you for trying to make it. Please watch it.

I feel that the ones who have written such negative reviews may be missing the point of the series completely, in what could possibly be the best series of 2010. The series is not intended to provide a deep insight to the 7 wonders of the world; if you are wishing this sort of insight then you'd be better off watching Michael Palin. The premise of this series is that it is about a man who hates traveling, hates "being outside of his comfort zone", combined with the fact that he is extremely ignorant of other counties and other cultures…….THIS is what makes it so funny! A lot of people have criticisms on the show, claiming that it is scripted….it's not. Each episode, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant send him to visit a different wonder of the world and set arrange some visits and extra activities along the way. The countries he visits, in order, are China, India, Jordan, Mexico, Egypt, Brazil and Peru. It's hilarious seeing Karl give his own unique insights into the cultures and the customs of the people he meets along the way, along with his moans and gripes with each place (Ricky and Steve deliberately want him to experience the sites as "authentically" as possible in an attempt to make him more cultured). His observations and opinions are at times genuinely hilarious and fans of the Ricky Gervais show and podcasts will already be familiar with his unique views on the world in general. I find it quite bemusing how certain reviewers will dismiss the entire 7 episodes based on such insight as they don't like Ricky Gervais' laugh…grow up. My only criticism is that it is only 7 shows. I really do hope for a 2nd series, where perhaps Karl can visit some other countries and cultures, maybe even Ricky and Steve can go aswell to provide their own insights. I would describe the series as educational and funny. If you are expecting Michael Palin, then go and watch Michael Palin! Let's please have another series!
