Paul e Marianne stanno trascorrendo le vacanze sull'isola di Pantelleria. Lei è una celebre rock star, lui un giovane fotografo. Il loro soggiorno è inaspettatamente interrotto da Harry, ex di Marianne e amico di Paul, snobbato in certi ambienti e considerato un dio in altri, avendo prodotto grandi rock band come i Rolling Stones. Harry arriva sull'isola con Penelope, che all'inizio tutti credono la sua nuova giovane amante, ma che in realtà è la figlia che ha di recente scoperto di avere. Penelope è una strana ragazza, composta e distaccata. L'isola si sta preparando al Ferragosto, e Marianne invita Harry e Penelope a restare con loro per il weekend. Inconsapevolmente la tavola è apparecchiata per il disastro. Marianne si scopre nuovamente attratta da Harry; Penelope mette gli occhi su Paul; la tensione della passata intimità appesantisce l'aria. Paul e Marianne lottano per mantenere in piedi il loro fragile legame, ma un giorno, mentre Marianne trascorre il pomeriggio con Harry, Paul si ritrova da solo con Penelope. Col trascorrere delle ore diventa chiaro che i tradimenti che si sono consumati cambieranno la vita di tutti. Harry torna alla villa nel mezzo della notte, ubriaco mentre Paul lo sta aspettando.
