Fritz Reiner's continuing high reputation as a great conductor is largely due to his legacy of outstanding recordings made for RCA with the Chicago orchestra he molded into one of the world's elite institutions. Still revered for his near-definitive Bartók and Strauss, Reiner treats the classics no less compellingly. His Beethoven 7th is in the Toscanini tradition, lean and lithe, with a powerful opening, a cool, flowing Allegretto, a quicksilver Presto, and a thrillingly triumphant last movement. The Fidelio Overture is on the same high level, bristling with drama and an exciting rush to the finish line. JVC has freshened the licensed originals with its remarkable XRCD processing, so these 1955 stereo recordings, amazingly, sound better than the most recent all-digital products, justifying their premium price.
