"THEY WHO DREAM BY DAY ARE COGNISANT OF MANY THINGS WHICH ESCAPE THOSE WHO DREAM ONLY BY NIGHT"
SΟ WROTE EDGAR ALLEN POE IN ELEONORA, HIS MYSTICAL rumination on Utopian life, love, death and madness. Poe's short story juxtaposed everyday reality with the ethereal, adding a confessional element into the mix for good measure. To say that many of the artists featured on this bespoke MOJO compilation have managed to achieve exactly that may be to over-stretch an already slender point. And yet, Poe's initial sentiment of day-time reverie applies to much of the music on offer here (quite possibly with the exception of Felt's Sempiternal Darkness…).
For the most part, MOJO's Dream Pop compendium is indeed filled with wondrous melodies, complex emotions and a distinct sense of otherness. It is a collection that proudly assembles a vast array of talent whose music rises far above the mundane aspects of the everyday and reaches for something altogether more metaphysical. It is also a testament to the pioneering work of the Cocteau Twins as well as that of Cluster and Eno. Indeed, this compilation is dedicated to their spirit and invention, as well as to those that continue to dare to dream…
