Latest title from Milan’s hotbed of fashion style, the opulent 10 Corso Como. This time, the theme is ‘Il sacro e il profano’, ‘Sacred and profane’.‘Profane’ takes the form of rhythm and dance, sometimes seen by the ecclesiastical fraternity as a threat to morality and goodliness (check out the Papal response to the rise of tango in Argentina). Featuring Harry Belafonte (with "Angelina"), Caetano Veloso (with the delightful "Rumba Azul") and Duke Ellington (with "The Mooche"). And finally Blues, the devil’s music ‘par excellence’, merits mention, so here you will find "Hoochie Coochie Man" by Muddy Waters, a sort of manifesto of the “most profane Profane” one can imagine.
But this defiant stance is deftly balanced by the beauty and respect of the sacred collection, be it Christian, Buddhist, Hindu or more generally theological. It features a wonderful version of "Ave Maria" modulated by Laurence Revey’s celestial voice. Then a formidable example of sufi spirituality brought to us by the unforgettable Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The shamanism influenced music of Sainkho, among the greatest World’s vocalists. Last, but not least, the Sacred CD ends with one of the marvellous "Sacred Hymns" composed by Gurdjeff one century ago, skilfully interpreted on piano by Keith Jarrett.
