With the iconic Michael Gira at the helm, My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky marks the first album by no-wave-cum-dream-pop outfit the Swans since 1996’s Soundtracks for the Blind. Rather than return to the strict brutality of their formative years or the more melodic tranquility of their early-'90s work, this particular version of the Swans synthesizes and builds upon the band’s divergent sonic legacy while also incorporating elements of Gira’s post-Swans work as the Angels of Light. The album features Mercury Rev’s Grasshopper and Gira disciple Devendra Banhart, while the band’s core comprises various Swans members from throughout the band’s decades-long history, including founding member Norman Westberg on guitar.
