The Ramones was, undoubtedly, one of the most influential bands in Rock history. Taking the most basic and primitive elements from the rock of the 50's and pop of the 60's with a remarkable quote of street attitude, the Ramones have created, almost by chance, the fundamental stone of the sound which later resulted in punk and its consequent sounds.

The Ramones - The Family Tree (2CD, 2008) RESTORED

This new compilation album was released in South America by Music Brokers Argentina and modestly entitled "RAMONES (The Family Tree)". The officially licensed CD was compiled by Ramones fans and includes rare cuts featuring the Ramones themselves as well as those rooted in the band's family tree, contains never released before version of "Slug" recorded live in New York, during Joey's birthday party in 1999. Released only as import limited edition this two disc set also includes extensive liner notes on all of the bands and the corresponding tracks. A must have for any Rock & Roll lovers & every Ramones fan.

Drummer Thomas Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone) was the one who got his friends Jeffrey Hyman (Joey Ramone, singer), John Cummings (Jonnhy Ramone, guitarist) and Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone, bass player) together in order to create the group in 1974. They never imagined that it was going to last for 22 years, and that they were going to perform 2,200 live shows and with scarcely no changes in the line up. The group split in August 1996, but it was not the end, since its spirit is still alive in a new generations of fans, through the rediscovering of their music and the permanent reissuing of old material. They did not find it enough to release more than a dozen original albums. During and after those 22 years, all the members had parallel projects, where they showed many musical unknown spects of themselves. They also supported new groups they liked, without forgetting their origin or stopping to play live their classic songs with other artists.
In this double album, with 28 tracks (following the tradition of their first records of 14 tracks each) we present different projects of the most important members of the group, from the first demos (1975) to Joe's and Dee Dee's last recordings, the adventures as a solo artist of Marc Bell (Marky Ramone, substitute on drums after founder member Tommy's departure) or the new project of young Christopher Joseph Ward (CJ Ramone), Bad Chopper. This material has a great musical diversity, emphasizing the quality of all its projects and presenting many jewels, absolutely impossible to find the record market, and a whole bunch of not yet released and never before heard songs. We truly hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed compiling it.

Blitzkrieg Вор
Die Toten Hosen have been for more than 2 decades the No. 1 rock band in Germany and the main referent of the German punk. In 1991 they decided to reveal to their millions of fans who were the artists that had influenced them most. That's why they recorded the album Learning English Lesson One with versions of all their favorite punk bands such as The Damned, The Adverts and The Boys (among others). In order to stand out in this project from all other version records, these Germans invited an original member of each group to take part in their own tribute album. The Hosen's preference towards The Ramones is clear since Blitzkrieg Bop is the opening track with Joey's voice intercalating phrases with singer Campino. Together they sing the maximum Ramones' hymn which was the first single officially released by the group in 1975.

I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend / Judy Is A Punk
The only songs in this Family Tree performed by The Ramones as a group. These are early versions, different from the ones included in the first album in 1976. This historical material was recorded in 1975 by request of the New York Dolls' manager, Marty Thau, for a compilation (The Groups Of Wrath) which portrays the new wave of New York: Richard Hell, Fleshtones, Blondie, The New York Dolls and the first recordings by Brian Setzer (Stray Cats' guitarist) with his first group Bloodless Pharaohs. The record was released in 1975, and these versions were only reissued by the record label Norton almost three decades later as a vinyl single.

I Am Seeing U.F.O.'s
May be one of the best of all the singles edited by Dee Dee Ramone as a solo artist. This song is also included in the album Zonked (1997) and presents the same backing band throughout the whole album: Daniel Rey, Barbara Zampini (Dee Dee's Argentinian wife) and Marky Ramone. This is the only recording by Dee Dee as a solo artist with Joey Ramone's as a lead voice.

Three Cheers For You
The Intruders is the first project, after The Ramones' split, of their long lasting drummer, Marky Ramone. Created while The Ramones was still an active group, The Intruders released their debut album towards the end of 1996. This song is included in that record, and its lyrics is a tribute to the fans in South America, with stanzas such as "Brazil and Argentina You're the greatest in the world, Can't forget Chile too, You make me smile when I think of you". Marky even recorded a version in Spanish of this song with a singer of Latin origin called Fabricio.

Good Enough For Me / Do It To Me
Two of the most significant songs of Bad Chopper's self-titled album, CJ Ramone's new project. An astonishing record which maintains The Ramones' energy and vitality with a remarkable influence of the Stooges and Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers. Produced by Daniel Rey (old associate and producer of The Ramones) is undoubtedly one of the best 3 records as solo artist edited by any of The Ramones after they split. Highly recommendable for any lover of The Ramones' traditional style: short songs full of energy and memorable melodies.

Good Rockin' Tonight / Viva Las Vegas
As it happens with many North Americans, Johnny Ramone's greatest musical hero was "The King", Elvis Presley; so much that in his house in California, Johnny had a room exclusively dedicated to Elvis, decorated with objects, posters and memorabilia from the unforgettable pioneer of white rock n'roll. That's why it is not surprising that the guitarist had accepted to record songs by The King for a tribute album, and this is his only recording after The Ramones split. His friend Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats' drummer) summoned Johnny who joined the group The Swing Cats , who were recording the album A Special Tribute To Elvis. Johnny played the guitar in this two songs, the only two official recordings he did without The Ramones. In Good Rockin' Tonight (an original song by Roy Brown in 1947, which was the second track released by Elvis in Sun Records) there's another deluxe guest as a lead vocalist: the stainless singer Lemmy Kilmister who is still the leader of Motorhead. "The main reason to record this song is because as an Elvis' fan I would have loved to listen to this song with me as the guitar player and Lemmy singing" said Johnny Ramone in an interview in 2001.

On The Beach
The Rattles is one of the forgotten big power-pop groups of New York of the 80's; they played as opening acts for groups like The Clash, B52's, The Stranglers and Buzzcocks, with only one released LP, "Rattled", in 1981. On The Beach was released that same year as a single, with Joey Ramone as a guest singer. This is so because The Rattlers' composer and group leader was Mickey Leigh, Joey's brother in real life. Mickey was The Ramones' first employee, as he was their assistant from the beginning of 1975 till the end of 1977. He also sang chorus in the foursome's first album. Mickey had other interesting groups as Birdland (with the renowned music journalist Lester Bangs), Crown the Good and, later, Stop. Nowadays, he dedicates himself to organizing rne-annualconcertloxelebrate Joey's birthday every May 19th, a charitable event following the tradition Joey himself started and which shows the best of the new and old rock of New York. On The Beach was also included in the EP Joey and Mickey recorded together in 1991: Sibling Rivalry: In A Family Way. That project was originally Joey's idea at a time when his brother wasn't in a group, after having performed with Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators). Mickey said the sessions were great fun: "We have recorded many things together, from the first when Joey was 15 and I was 12 up to this one. We always enjoyed being in the studios, it was a natural environment for us both".

Negative Creep
Written by Kurt Cobain, originally launched in Nirvana's album Bleach in 1989. This track is about hating oneself and the use and abuse of drugs. Undoubtedly, these issues influenced Dee Dee Ramone when he chose the song for the tribute album to the Seattle group in 1999. Together with other punk celebrities such as D.O.A., Vice Squad and The Vibrators who participate on other tracks, Dee Dee excelled in this performance by Nirvana's song, a group highly influenced by The Ramones.

The KKK Took My Baby Away
Often rumored to be about Joey losing his girlfriend to Johnny, the urban legend is demystified by the fact that the song predates the events. Joey's ex-girlfriend Linda later became Johnny's wife and companion of over 20 years and the two remained together for the rest of his life. This song originally appeared on the Ramones "Pleasant Dreams" album in 1981. A music video was shot but not used and although it was never released as a single, the song became a fan favorite all over the world. This cover version was recorded live in concert by Osaka Popstar, the multimedia music and art project of singer/producer John Cafiero. The critically acclaimed debut album "Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk" features frontman Cafiero with a revolving lineup of punk legends as his backing band including Marky Ramone on drums, Jerry Only of the Misfits on bass, Dez Cadena of Black Flag on guitar and Ivan Julian of Richard Hell and the Voidoids on guitar. Osaka Popstar toured with the entire "American Legends of Punk" lineup throughout North America and Europe in support of the debut outing. This track, recorded live during the aforementioned tour, is featured on Osaka Popstar's "Rock 'Em O-Sock 'Em Live!" CD. Tommy Ramone, sole survivor of the original Ramones lineup, producer and co-author of many Ramones classics, (as well as innovator of the Ramones unique drum style), hailed the live release from Osaka Popstar stating "This is a great sounding live show, which includes excellent performances of several classic Ramones songs". In an interview with Alternative Press, Marky Ramone cited the studio debut from Osaka Popstar as "one of the best albums that I ever played on." In addition to his work behind the mic and in the recording studio, John Cafiero is also known for his work as a platinum selling film and video director. His credits include the DVD "Ramones Raw", which is certified gold in the US, Australia and Spain and has the honor of being the highest billboard charting release in the Ramones' historic career.

Lying To Myself
Blackfire is one of the most powerful punk groups nowadays. It is a trio made up of two brothers and a sister, something special itself. But it is even more singular if they belong to a tribe of aborigines from Arizona and they play punk rock mixed with tribal music. CJ Ramone met them when the bass player Jeneda Benally left him a letter after one of The Ramones' concerts thanking them for "being the only group apart from ourselves that are actually a family". CJ phoned and told her that they weren't really brothers! After the initial disappointment had passed away, Jenna and her brothers became very good friends of the band, so much that Joey had his first concert as a solo artist in the Navajo region where Blackfire and the Benally family lived, leaving a very positive message to the local youth. The singer always loved Blackfire's attitude which consisted in singing about problems which affect not only them as a tribe but all of us as a global community, asking everybody to become openly involved with the movement. When Joey got to know that Blackfire was going to record their first album in New York, he immediately offered himself to sing with them. This was the song chosen by Joey to sing in duet, originally included in the album One Nation Under (2001). Joey defined Blackfire as a group of "fireball punk rock".

I'm Making Monsters For My Friends
In 1993, Dee Dee Ramone was trying to get rid of his own demons by moving from New York to Europe. He first stayed in Amsterdam, where he met another exiled New Yorker, John Carco. Together they founded I.C.L.C. (Inter Celestial Light Commune), a powerful trio of raw rock & roll, "creep rock" according to Dee Dee's own definition. In 1994, they released their only record I Hate Freaks Like You and a short time after that they came apart, after several tours in Europe and one in Argentina. Two years later The Ramones "borrowed" two of the best songs of that album for their farewell record Adios Amigos! This one is one of those two songs, in its original version, where Dee Dee is part of a shocking vocal duet with Nina Hagen, the renowned German punk goddess. I.C.L.C. filmed an excellent low-n video clip of this song which is almost impossible to get nowadays.

Don't Blame Me
Undoubtedly, the best song of all the ones edited by Marky Ramone in his solo careeer. This song, originally from the second album by The Intruders (The Answer To Your Problems?), is a tribute to Phil Spector's compositions and the girl groups Spector himself created in the 60's. To make it better, the brave Joan Jett was the guest vocalist. She was the founder of The Runaways, the famous glam group of the 70's, who had toured the USA with The Ramones at the end of the 70's. The producer of the song is Lars Friederisken, leader of Rancid, one of the most important punk bands of the 90's and a great fan of The Ramones.

Meatball Sandwich
This is a previously unreleased song. Paul Kostabi (founder of White Zombie) is the main composer of the group Youth Gone Mad, and was one of the bass player's best friends towards the end of his life and who he recorded a couple of albums with. Besides he was Dee Dee's painter friend. Dee Dee dedicated himself more to painting than to the music in his later years. Paul is the only person outside The Ramones who can boast to have recorded together with the two main composers of the group. Joey Ramone is the lead voice in this song, in a duet with Lee Marie Riviera, the deceased singer of Fall From Grace. Youth Gone Mad is the backing band in this performance from the 80's. "Joey liked the song so much when he heard the instrumental version that he wrote the lyrics and finally recorded it. The line which reads 'meaty beaty big and bouncy in my head' was written in a bar in New York while he was thinking about the waitress' breasts!". (It also makes reference to Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy, the famous album of singles by The Who -one of Joey's favorite bands- released in 1971)

Pet Sematary
A classic song written by Dee Dee Ramone in 1989 by request of the famous writer Stephen King to be used in the soundtrack of the film bearing the same name, directed by Mary Lambert and based on the book by King. This version, performed by Marky Ramone Group, was recorded live in Mexico in 2005. This series of shows were the first ones of the drummer without The Intruders, and he was already dedicated a hundred per cent to offer sets of songs by The Ramones with casual musicians as accompaniment. This version was released in 2006 by the record label Fuel 2000, as part of the bonus disc of the album Start Of The Century, a compilation of both records by The Intruders plus a complete set recorded live.

Now I Wanna Be Sedated
Originally from the album Hop Around, one before last released by Dee Dee as a solo artist, in 1999. The album was recorded in Toronto (Canada) with the artistic production of the mythic guitar player Chris Spedding (also producer of The Sex Pistols at the beginning). The drummer was Billy Rogers who had previously been a session musician of the Ramones in 1982, and even recorded the song Time Has Come Today from the album Subterranean Jungle. In Hop Around Dee Dee wrote many songs making reference to some of The Ramones' old classics such as 38th & 8th, I Don't Wanna Die In The Basement and Now I Wanna Be Sedated.

See My Way
Version of the song originally recorded by the group Blodwin Pig, made up by the guitarist Mick Abrahams after leaving Jethro Tull in 1968. This track was included in the group's first album, Ahead Rings Out, in 1969. This version by Joey Ramone with his brother Micky Leigh is originally included in the aforementioned EP Sibling Rivalry - In a Family Way, 1991 (sec tin the beach). Mickey says "it was a song I used to play with my other bands. Joey liked my arrangement a lot and I think he would have liked The Ramones could record it, but the part of the guitar was, let's say, complicated for Johnny. So Joey suggested we should record it in that joint project." The cover of the single shows the two brothers sitting at the table with a woman about to hit them with a kneading stick. For many years it was believed she was Charlotte Lesher, their mother. But Micky makes it clear she was another woman, and declares "We wanted mum to be there but we also needed somebody who looked ugly and mean. No matter how hard she tried, it did not work. So the photographer, George Dubose, hired an old actress from a casting agency. She was very nice but also looked cruel when she wanted. She earned 200 dollars for an hour on work".

Cherry Bomb
The emblematic theme by The Runaways (see Don't Blame Me), written by the guitarist Joan Jett (and producer Kim Fowley) when the singer Cherie Currie was being auditioned. It turned out to be a hit that opens the quintet's first album, released in 1976. In this unusual version Cherie Currie is accompanied by the spontaneous supergroup made up by the famous Wayne Kramer (MC5) as guitar player and Marky Ramone as drummer. Another gem for collectors.

Bad Horoscope
This is the В Side of the single I Am Seeing UFOs by Dee Dee Ramone as a solo artist. This single was particularly special because (apart from having the cover designed by Dee Dee himself) there were two guest singers, one for each track. Joey Ramone sang the main song, while Bad Horoscope had another legend of early New York new wave scene: Lux Interior, singer of the legendary band The Cramps. It was also included in the album Zonked in 1997.

Nowhere Man
Marky Ramone & The Intruders included this excellent version of one of The Beatles' classics in their second album The Answer To Your Problems? in 1997. This might have been an eternal debt, since New York Fast-Four had never before made their own version of any song by the Fab-Four of Liverpool.

Punishment Fits The Crime
This is the only version released by CJ Ramone as a solo artist so far, recorded for the tribute album Todos Somos Ramones in 2003 together with the Argentinian punk group Bien Desocupados as guests. The track originally sung by Dee Dee Ramone in the album Brain Drain by The Ramones (1989), was frequently performed by CJ with The Ramones in their tours, and nowadays it is part of Bad Chopper's shows, his new project.

Slug
Written by Joey Ramone for the group towards the end of the 70's. Although it was recorded in 1977, it was rejected by the other members, so Joey decided to give it to his brother, who used it in his group The Rattlers, and it was first played live in 1980 in Max's Kansas City club, in New York. The Ramones' version was released in a compilation in 1991, excelling above many of the songs actually included in their original records. This is why, once The Ramones split, it was one of Joey's favorite songs to play live. Thus, this version appears, which had never been released before, recorded with The Independents, a great horror ska punk group, one of the singer's favorites (he produced their first album Back From The Grave). This version was recorded live in New York, during Joey's birthday party in May 1999. This party included performances by other friends of the singer such as the punk pioneers The Dictators and the new glam-punk Toilet Boys.

Round The Bend
Uncle Monk is Tommy Ramone's current band, The Ramones founder, original drummer, and producer of many albums. It is Tommy's first serious official project in many years. It is an alternative country and bluegrass duet with punk attitude. A great surprise for the fans of the band. Tommy sings this song together with Claudia Tienan (ex-The Simplistics), which opens his highly recommended debut self named album released in 2007.

The Bowery Electric
Written by Jed Davies (author and singer from New York, nowadays leading The Hanslick Rebellion) on April 15th 2001, when he heard about Joey Ramone's death while he was walking along the Bowery area of New York, where the famous club CBGB was placed. Recorded that same year with Arturo Vega (The Ramones' artistic director) as executive producer, it is the only recording where Tommy Ramone and Marky Ramone perform together. The line-up is completed by Daniel Rey and CJ Ramone. Edited as a single in Spain with a design at the back cover drawn by Dee Dee Ramone for such an occasion, who also wrote a poem to be included inside. Jed comments about his feelings: "It was amazing! The best part was to be able to witness Marky and Tommy arguing about the drums arrangements. It was nice to see how Marky treated Tommy with remarkable respect. It is always an honor to play with any Ramone because of the unparalleled ethical way in which they worked".

Jump In The Fire
Fourth track of Metallica's debut album, Kill'em All, which was also released to the market as a single in 1984. Dee Dee Ramone made this unique version as a punk tribute to the trash pioneers of the Californian Bay Area. As regards concept and bands, it is very similar to the previously mentioned Nirvana's (see Negative Creep)

The Wonderful Widow Of Eighteen Springs
John Cage is one of the most important avant-garde composers of all times. He is a controversial composer who changed contemporary music completely, providing it with an utterly renewing language, with a great Zen influence. Cage created pieces with long silences, aleatory structures and atonal harmonies. This unbelievable and surprising version performed by Joey Ramone as a solo artist was included in the album Uncaged (1993), which was a tribute to Cage's works with the contribution of other North American rock players such as David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Lee Ranaldo, Jello Biafra, Richard Hell and Lou Reed.
