Unlike 1994’s "Feel", which had a lighter sound with definite pop, soul and funk influences, "Addiction" was a definite hard rock record, at times bordering on heavy metal. It is generally considered Hughes’ heaviest solo album, both musically and topically.
You know, it's too bad that Glenn Hughes (former Trapeze and Deep Purple bassist/vocalist) doesn't receive that much attention these days. He's got a better, more soulful and emotion-inflected voice than 95% of other vocalists that are on the airwaves at the moment. Not only that, but his lyrics are better and more meaningful. Whatever, let most the public be caught up in schmoe dime-store music, it's their loss! Glenn is mainly known for his blues and funk stylings, which is only part time in evidence on Addiction. For the most part, this albums rocks but intelligently. Yeah, 7 out of the 10 studio cuts are good-to-great '90s hard rock and even some low rumbling metal. And "the voice" sounds as good as ever. Though I really love good grooves, the ballads - "Talk About It," "Blue Jade" and "I Don't Want to Live that Way Again" are just outstanding, well layered and overflowing with good ol' Hughes emotion. Overall, this album beats the pants off of three-quarters of music in the genre today.Tracklist :
