Ford Theatre were one of the most promising and best US psychedelic bands of the 60 ‘s. A few months after truly excellent Trilogy For The Masses debut LP (from December 1968) they released another concept album for ABC Records - Time Changes. Influenced by the recent works of The Beatles, The Byrds and Love, this slightly more commercial and unjustly underrated record was a kind of musical based on one man’s life. The music itself was very diverse, ranged from dark, atmospheric and ambitious tracks full of hard rock guitar-organ interplay, to much lighter sounds usually coupled with lush sound of strings. This record (an early production by Bill Szymczyk) is specially recommended for those who like classic 60’s rock sound.

================================================================================

First of all, the rating isn't really about the music - I would think that only someone who owned the original album would be seeking this out (and you know who you are). It is very much a product of its time - late sixties, and a weird mixture of pure pop, psychedelic pop, even some country-pop sound (note the recurring word); a concept album with hardly a strong concept. Well performed, but really a nostalgia thing, and very different from the Boston-psychedelic sound of their first album, "Trilogy For The Masses" (which is, again a period piece, but quite good, with driving organ and guitar, and not pop). But I liked it, and always hoped it would appear on CD - which was extremely unlikely (I doubt it sold more than a few thousand copies).

But on occasion I did see it on CD - and was always disappointed (and ripped off, to be frank). Two versions I got were mastered from well-used (and abused) vinyl, and a version sold here on Amazon as a "made on demand" version that uses the label "Soundtrack Classics" turned out to be essentially a bootleg-level mastering, with gaps between the songs (which are supposed to run seamlessly together on each "side"), and some of the songs did a quick fade-up out of the silence, so it wasn't a TAO vs DAO issue; there were short sections essentially missing. I did a frequency analysis and while there was at least no mp3 "cliff", there was obvious massive noise reduction, far beyond what one would need even for a master of that era. Was it taken from a cassette? 8-track? In any case, it was, as I said, more like a bootleg.

But the version that is under the "Flawed Gems" label is the real deal! The Marketplace seller I bought it from, Rockbone, had only the one copy, but I see that, as of this writing, at least one other Marketplace seller has the Flawed Gems version. The mastering is perfect, and is full-spectrum. If you are looking for this album on CD, the Flawed Gems production is the one to get. So while the album is not a five-star album - probably a 3 at best, and an odd, period-based 3 at that - for those who want it, the "rating" of the music is irrelevant - it is the quality of the CD mastering that I think would count, and that gets a 5.
