The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!' The Rolling Stones in Concert is a live album by The Rolling Stones, released 4 September 1970 on Decca Records in the UK and on London Records in the US. It was recorded in New York and Maryland in November 1969, just before the release of Let It Bleed. It is the first live album to reach number 1 in the UK.

Many, including The Rolling Stones, consider this their first official full-length live release, despite the appearance of the US-only Got Live If You Want It! in 1966 as a contractual obligation product. One reason for releasing a live album was to counter the release of the Live'r Than You'll Ever Be bootleg recording of an Oakland performance on the same tour, a recording which was even reviewed in Rolling Stone magazine.

Having not toured since April 1967, The Rolling Stones were eager to hit the road by 1969. With their two most recent albums, Beggars Banquet and Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) being highly praised, audiences were anticipating their live return. Their 1969 American Tour's trek during November into December, with Terry Reid, B.B. King (replaced on some dates by Chuck Berry) and Ike and Tina Turner as supporting acts, played to packed houses. The tour was the first for Mick Taylor with the Stones, having replaced Brian Jones shortly before Jones' death in July; the performances prominently showcased the guitar interplay of Taylor with Keith Richards. While featured on only two tracks from Let it Bleed, this was the first album in which Taylor's abilities were fully represented.

The performances captured for this release were recorded on 27–28 November 1969 at New York City's Madison Square Garden, while "Love in Vain" was recorded in Baltimore, Maryland on 26 November 1969. Overdubbing was undertaken during January and February 1970 in London's Olympic Studios. No instruments were overdubbed, although on bootlegs, examples are known of Richards trying out different guitar parts (e.g. a guitar solo on "Jumpin' Jack Flash"). The finished product featured new lead vocals on half the tracks, and added backing vocals by Richards on several others.

Some of the performances, as well as the photography session for the album cover featuring Charlie Watts and a donkey, are depicted in the documentary film Gimme Shelter, and shows Jagger and Watts on a road in Birmingham, UK in early December 1969 posing with the donkey. The actual cover photo however was taken in early February 1970 in London, and does not originate from the 1969 session. The photo, featuring Watts with guitars and bass drums hanging from the neck of a donkey, was inspired by the lyrics to Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" (although these lyrics refer to a mule).

In the Rolling Stone review of the album, critic Lester Bangs said, "I have no doubt that it's the best rock concert ever put on record."

'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!': The Rolling Stones in Concert was released in September 1970, well into the sessions for their next studio album, Sticky Fingers, and was very well received critically and commercially, reaching #1 in the UK and #6 in the US where it went platinum. Except for compilations, it was the last Rolling Stones album released through Decca Records in the UK and London Records in the US before launching their own Rolling Stones Records label.

The title of the album was adapted from the song "Get Yer Yas Yas Out" by Blind Boy Fuller. The phrase used in Fuller's song was "get your yas yas out the door".

Recorded during their American tour in late 1969, and centered around live versions of material from the Beggars Banquet-Let It Bleed era. Often acclaimed as one of the top live rock albums of all time, its appeal has dimmed a little today. The live versions are reasonably different from the studio ones, but ultimately not as good, a notable exception being the long workout of "Midnight Rambler," with extended harmonica solos and the unforgettable section where the pace slows to a bump-and-grind crawl. Some Stones aficionados, in fact, prefer a bootleg from the same tour (Liver Than You'll Ever Be, to which this album was unleashed in response), or their amazing the-show-must-go-on performance in the jaws of hell at Altamont (preserved in the Gimme Shelter film). Fans who are unconcerned with picky comparisons such as these will still find Ya-Ya's an outstanding album, and it's certainly the Stones' best official live recording. The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Sticky Fingers is the ninth British and 11th American studio album by English rock band The Rolling Stones, released in April 1971. It is the band's first album of the 1970s and its first release on the band's newly formed label, Rolling Stones Records, after having been contracted since 1963 with Decca Records in the UK and London Records in the US. It is also Mick Taylor's first full-length appearance on a Rolling Stones album, the first Rolling Stones album not to feature any contributions from guitarist and founder Brian Jones and the first one on which Mick Jagger is credited with playing guitar.

The album is often regarded as one of the Stones' best, containing songs such as the chart-topping "Brown Sugar" and the folk-influenced "Wild Horses", and achieving triple platinum certification in the US.

Pieced together from outtakes and much-labored-over songs, Sticky Fingers manages to have a loose, ramshackle ambience that belies both its origins and the dark undercurrents of the songs. It's a weary, drug-laden album – well over half the songs explicitly mention drug use, while the others merely allude to it – that never fades away, but it barely keeps afloat. Apart from the classic opener, "Brown Sugar" (a gleeful tune about slavery, interracial sex, and lost virginity, not necessarily in that order), the long workout "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and the mean-spirited "Bitch," Sticky Fingers is a slow, bluesy affair, with a few country touches thrown in for good measure. The laid-back tone of the album gives ample room for new lead guitarist Mick Taylor to stretch out, particularly on the extended coda of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." But the key to the album isn't the instrumental interplay – although that is terrific – it's the utter weariness of the songs. "Wild Horses" is their first non-ironic stab at a country song, and it is a beautiful, heart-tugging masterpiece. Similarly, "I Got the Blues" is a ravished, late-night classic that ranks among their very best blues. "Sister Morphine" is a horrifying overdose tale, and "Moonlight Mile," with Paul Buckmaster's grandiose strings, is a perfect closure: sad, yearning, drug-addled, and beautiful. With its offhand mixture of decadence, roots music, and outright malevolence, Sticky Fingers set the tone for the rest of the decade for the Stones. Reviewed by Stephen Thomas Erlewine allmusic.com

The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Stone Age is a compilation by The Rolling Stones released on the Decca label in 1971. It reached #4 on the UK charts. The Stones were strongly against this release. In full page ads in Record Mirror and NME on 20 March 1971 they stated, "We didn't know this record was going to be released. It is, in our opinion, below the standard we try to keep up, both in choice of content and cover design." The 12 songs, dating from the mid-1960s, were chosen because they had never appeared on a UK studio album, some having been originally released only on singles and some having only been released on US studio albums to that point.

Released in 1971, while the Rolling Stones were still enjoying their maiden hit for new label Atlantic, Stone Age was the first installment in what would ultimately become the bane of the existence of band and fans alike – shoddily constructed compilations recycling their 1960s catalog, bolstered with one or two "rarities" to ensure collectors' compliance. Or so goes the legend. In fact, Stone Age, like several other of the earliest collections in this sequence, is a rather enjoyable romp through the group's 1964-1966 archive, and includes no less than three tracks that had hitherto avoided U.K. release: "Blue Turns to Grey," "One More Try," and "My Girl," plus the never-before-on-album B-side "The Spider and the Fly." Other tracks were at least the underexposed remnants of EPs and early albums, and the final result, while certainly appearing fairly random, nevertheless illustrates the sheer dexterity that was the breakthrough Stones' most hidden attribute. The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Exile on Main St. is a double album by English rock band The Rolling Stones. It was released on 12 May 1972 by Rolling Stones Records. The album's music incorporates rock and roll, blues, soul, country, and gospel genres.

Although it originally received mixed reviews, Exile on Main St. is generally considered by music critics to be the Rolling Stones' greatest album. In 1987, as part of the magazine's 20th anniversary, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it third on the 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years. In 2003, the album was ranked 7th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the highest Rolling Stones album ranked on the list.

Exile on Main St. was written and recorded between 1968 and 1972. Mick Jagger said "After we got out of our contract with Allen Klein, we didn't want to give him [those earlier tracks]," as they were forced to do with "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" from Sticky Fingers. Many tracks were recorded between 1969 and 1971 at Olympic Studios and Jagger's Stargroves country house in England during sessions for Sticky Fingers.

By the spring of 1971 the Rolling Stones owed more in taxes than they could pay and left Britain before the government could seize their assets. Mick Jagger settled in Paris with his new bride Bianca, and guitarist Keith Richards rented a villa, Nellcôte, in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice. The other members settled in the south of France. As a suitable recording studio could not be found where they could continue work on the album, Richards' basement at Nellcôte became a makeshift studio using the band's mobile recording truck.

Greeted with decidedly mixed reviews upon its original release, Exile on Main St. has become generally regarded as the Rolling Stones' finest album. Part of the reason why the record was initially greeted with hesitant reviews is that it takes a while to assimilate. A sprawling, weary double album encompassing rock & roll, blues, soul, and country, Exile doesn't try anything new on the surface, but the substance is new. Taking the bleakness that underpinned Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers to an extreme, Exile is a weary record, and not just lyrically. Jagger's vocals are buried in the mix, and the music is a series of dark, dense jams, with Keith Richards and Mick Taylor spinning off incredible riffs and solos. And the songs continue the breakthroughs of their three previous albums. No longer does their country sound forced or kitschy – it's lived-in and complex, just like the group's forays into soul and gospel. While the songs, including the masterpieces "Rocks Off," "Tumbling Dice," "Torn and Frayed," "Happy," "Let It Loose," and "Shine a Light," are all terrific, they blend together, with only certain lyrics and guitar lines emerging from the murk. It's the kind of record that's gripping on the very first listen, but each subsequent listen reveals something new. Few other albums, let alone double albums, have been so rich and masterful as Exile on Main St., and it stands not only as one of the Stones' best records, but sets a remarkably high standard for all of hard rock. The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Gimme Shelter is a compilation by the Rolling Stones released on the Decca label in 1971. It reached #19 on the U.K chart.

This is not a soundtrack album from the film of the same name. Side one is composed of previously released studio recording from 1968 and 1969. Side two is previously released live recordings from October 1966.

The first album released by the Rolling Stones' former U.K. record company, Decca, following the band's departure to Atlantic in 1971, Gimme Shelter set the stage for the somewhat disreputable aura that still hangs over each of the compilations that the label unveiled during the early '70s. It was titled, of course, for the Stones' own recently released movie/concert documentary, with a jacket emblazoned with a suitably late-'60s live shot and the promise of half a dozen previously unreleased (in the U.K.) live performances. It was only when you got it home that you discovered the live cuts came from the scream-infested 1966 Got Live if You Want It! monstrosity, with the remainder of the set drawn from the band's regular studio albums. In other words, if you thought you were getting the Gimme Shelter movie soundtrack – think again. the Stones themselves were outraged, issuing a terse and extremely uncomplimentary press statement against the album – that, too, set the stage for future relations between band and label, as a host of further collections (Stone Age, Milestones, Rock'n'Rollin' Stones, and No Stone Unturned) dug deep into the archive as the decade progressed. And, while time (and nostalgia) have vindicated those other compilations, Gimme Shelter remains unloved and unlovable, an example of record-company deviousness as it hits rock & rolling bottom. Cool sleeve, though. Reviewed by Dave Thompson allmusic.com

The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Rock 'n' Rolling Stones is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones released in 1972. It reached #41 in the British chart.

The album contains five Chuck Berry covers and also Berry-related songs like "Route 66" and "Down the Road Apiece".

Another of the oft-derided collections thrown together by U.K. Decca in the first years following the Rolling Stones' departure for their own label in 1971, Rock'n'Rollin' Stones is, in fact, an intriguing collection of (primarily) early B-sides, EP tracks, and album cuts designed to illustrate the group's debt not only to Chuck Berry, but to the late-'50s rock & roll/blues scene in general; no great disclosure there, of course, but still a point that deserves illumination. After all, the Stones' takes on Berry's "Come On," "Talkin' About You," and "Carol," in particular, set the standard for most subsequent Brit-based covers of those songs, while the inclusion of the same author's "Bye Bye Johnny" was noteworthy from a collectors' standpoint as well – the song was hitherto available only on the band's debut (eponymous) EP and, as such, was already impossible to find. (The U.S. More Hot Rocks collection, which includes that EP in its entirety, was still to be released at this time.) Elsewhere, Rock'n'Rollin' Stones hits all the expected high points in the band's indeed rock & rolling repertoire, including their delightfully languorous revision of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" and the fiery "I Just Wanna Make Love to You." Indeed, the energy levels are so high that the inclusion of their own "19th Nervous Breakdown" – presumably for the sake of having at least one major hit single onboard – seems utterly redundant. And it's not often that you can say that. Reviewed by Dave Thompson allmusic.com

The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

No Stone Unturned is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones released in 1973. Eight of the twelve tracks had been previously released on single b-sides in the United Kingdom, and the rest had been released on EPs.

The song Sad Day is released as a single from the LP. Keith said he didn't mind them repackaging the old stuff but wished they would use a bit more imagination about it. He said that "putting out old flipsides as singles is shit". He said the record company Decca were supposed to be making records "but they might just as easily be making baked beans." Keith then bluntly called the record company "the biggest bunch of shits in the world".

The best of the various Rolling Stones collections issued by British Decca during the early '70s, No Stone Unturned is a marvelous gathering of (primarily) non-album B-sides and EP cuts that would not be entirely superseded until the appearance of the three-CD Singles Collection: The London Years singles collection almost a decade and a half later. Indeed, the only serious criticism of the set should be its brevity – 12 songs merely scraped the surface of the Stones' unavailable catalog, and the presence of two songs that had only ever been issued in the U.S. ("Sad Day" and "Congratulations") simply rubbed salt into the British collectors' wounds. In the years before ABKCO consolidated the Stones' U.K. and U.S. catalogs, those old American B-sides and album-fillers were impossible to find in Britain, and their piecemeal distribution over sundry compilations was seen as nothing short of opportunistic gouging. That said, No Stone Unturned certainly cherry-picks the best of the Stones' period rarities, from the post-psychedelia of "Child of the Moon," all the way back to the primeval beat-boomery of the instrumental "Stoned" and their grinding take on "Money" – the song that illustrated for early-'60s observers just how far removed from Beatle-dom the Stones' early influences really were. When the Fab Four sang the same song, after all, they sounded like they were willing to go out and work for their pay. the Stones sounded just as happy to live off somebody else's. The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

After the release of Hot Rocks 1964–1971 in 1971, an album entitled Necrophilia was compiled for release as the follow-up, with the aid of Andrew Loog Oldham, featuring many previously unreleased (or, more accurately, discarded) outtakes from the Rolling Stones' Decca/London period. While that project failed to materialize—with More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) being released in its place—most of the unreleased songs were held over for a future project. In 1974, in order to give it an air of authority, Bill Wyman involved himself in compiling an album he entitled Black Box. However, Allen Klein wanted more Mick Jagger/Keith Richards songs in the project for monetary reasons, and Wyman's version remained unreleased. Metamorphosis was issued in its place.

Most tracks that appear on side one of the vinyl album (all tracks up until "Try a Little Harder", except for "Don't Lie to Me") are demo songs, written by Jagger and Richards for other artists to perform. They were mostly recorded with session musicians like Big Jim Sullivan on guitar, Clem Cattini on drums, and Jimmy Page on guitar, and were not intended for release by the Rolling Stones. Indeed, on most of these tracks the only Rolling Stones member that appears is Jagger. While "Out of Time" and "Heart of Stone" were already well-known, they appear here in drastically different renditions, with session players providing the backing. Side two includes unreleased band recordings created up until the Sticky Fingers sessions of 1970.

Released in June 1975, Metamorphosis came out the same day as the band's authorized hits collection Made in the Shade and was also seen to be cashing in on The Rolling Stones' summer Tour of the Americas. While the critical reaction was lukewarm (many felt some of the songs were best left unreleased), Metamorphosis still managed to reach #8 in the US, though it only made #45 in the UK. Two singles, "Out of Time" (featuring Jagger singing over the same backing track used for Chris Farlowe's 1966 version) and a cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Don't Know Why" briefly made the singles charts.

Upon its initial release, Metamorphosis was released with 16 songs in the UK, while the American edition had only 14—omitting tracks "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind" and "We're Wastin' Time".

The album's cover art alludes to Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis.

Though it remains the only Rolling Stones outtakes collection album ever to be officially released, Metamorphosis is one of those albums that has been slighted by almost everyone who has touched it, a problem that lies in its genesis. While both the Stones and former manager Allen Klein agreed that some form of archive release was necessary, if only to stem the then-ongoing flow of bootlegs, they could not agree how to present it. Of the two, the band's own version of the album, compiled by Bill Wyman, probably came closest to the fan's ideal, cherrypicking the vaults for some of the more legendary outtakes and oddities for a bird's-eye view of the entire band's creative brilliance. Klein, on the other hand, chose to approach the issue from the songwriting point-of-view, focusing on the wealth of demos for songs that Jagger/Richards gave away (usually to artists being produced by Andrew Oldham) and which, therefore, frequently featured more session men than Rolling Stones. Both approaches had their virtues, but when Klein's version of the album became the one that got the green light, of course fans and collectors bemoaned the non-availability of the other. The fact is, if Wyman's selection had been released, then everyone would have been crying out for Klein's. Sometimes, you just can't win. So, rather than wring your hands over what you don't receive, you should celebrate what you do. A heavily orchestrated version of "Out of Time," with Jagger accompanying the backing track that would later give Chris Farlowe a U.K. number one hit, opens the show; a loose-limbed "Memo From Turner," recorded with Al Kooper, closes it. No complaints there, then. The real meat, however, lies in between times. During 1964-1965, Mick Jagger and Andrew Oldham headed a session team that also included the likes of arrangers Art Greenslade and Mike Leander, guitarist Jimmy Page, pianist Nicky Hopkins, bassist John Paul Jones, and many more, convened to cut demos for the plethora of songs then being churned out by Jagger and Keith Richards. Some would subsequently be redone by the Stones themselves; others, however, would be used as backing tracks for other artist's versions of the songs. Metamorphosis pulls a number of tracks from this latter grouping, and while "Each and Every Day of the Year" (covered by Bobby Jameson), "I'd Much Rather Be With the Boys" (the Toggery Five), "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind" (Vashti), "Sleepy City" (the Mighty Avengers), and "We're Wasting Time" (Jimmy Tarbuck) may not be Stones performances per se, they are certainly Stones songs and, for the most part, as strong as any of the band originals included on the group's first four or five LPs. Elsewhere, the 1964 Chess studio outtake "Don't Lie to Me" is as fine a Chuck Berry cover as the Stones ever mustered, while "Family," the rocking "Jiving Sister Fanny," Bill Wyman's "Downtown Suzie," and a delightfully lackadaisical version of Stevie Wonder's "I Don't Know Why" are outtakes from two of the Stones' finest-ever albums, Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. All of which adds up to an impressive pedigree, whatever the circumstances behind the album, and whatever else could have been included on it. Indeed, if there are any criticisms to be made, it is that the album sleeve itself is singularly uninformative, and the contents are seriously jumbled. But those are its only sins. Everything else you've heard about it is simply wishful (or otherwise) thinking. Reviewed by Dave Thompson allmusic.com

The Rolling Stones - Complete CD-Maximun Collection (2002) (Volumes 21-31 of 31)

Rolled Gold: The Very Best of the Rolling Stones is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones released without the band's authorisation by its former label Decca Records in 1975. It is a double album that reached No. 7 on the UK chart and was a strong seller over the years.

When Rolled Gold was initially released in 1975, there was no shortage of Rolling Stone compilations – hell, there were two others released that year, the useful Decca/London-era rarities compilation Metamorphosis and the slapped-together Rolling Stones Records singles comp Made in the Shade, containing the American singles released on Rolling Stones Records in the early '70s, along with assorted album tracks. Designed for the U.K. market and never released in America, Rolled Gold split the difference between the two, rounding up all the big hits they had on Decca/London. At 28 tracks and two LPs, the collection offered a lot of bang for the buck and it was an enormous hit in the U.K., yet it never made it onto CD – and, in a way, it didn't really need to, as the CD era brought lots of excellent compilations, ranging from reissues of the Hot Rocks sets to the three-disc 1989 box The Singles Collection: The London Years to 2002's Forty Licks, which offered a double-disc overview of their entire career. In light of these, a reissued Rolled Gold didn't quite seem necessary, but it eventually did surface, making it into stores just in time for the 2007 holiday season. This edition of Rolled Gold is pumped up with 12 tracks, making it 18 tracks shorter than The Singles Collection – about a disc shorter, which is appropriate – and it largely fills in the gaps with American singles like "Tell Me" and album cuts that have become Stones staples, along with extending the running length into 1971 with "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses," the two early Rolling Stones Records singles that wind up on every ABKCO comp. Although it's hard to imagine who doesn't have this music in their collection already, this expanded Rolled Gold is nevertheless a good compromise between the original early singles set Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) and the box The Singles Collection, an album that provides almost all of the Stones' early classics in a very entertaining – if not quite necessary – package.
