Pink Floyd - Smoking Blues (1969) (bootleg) RE-UP

Despite having a picture of the barret era band on the cover this recording actually comes from a promotion white label release that was put out by the band in 1970. This means the sound is exellent although it does contain a few flaws(bass distortion at the start of the Embyro and a PA problem for a second or so during Cymbaline). It has also been released on the cd set "montruex casino" that also included an average audience recordings of the next night and some common BBC material. There are a number of rarties playing during this september 1970 concert from switerland that combined with its exellent sound quality make this one of the best recordings for floyd fans to startcollecting unoffical recordings.
Astronomy Domini - 10:35 - Quite simular in structure to the version that appeared on ummagumma but played far heavier and more agressively with waters even throwing in a few "eugene" screams. All in all this version is much closer to barrets orginal that the one released on Ummagumma.
Fat Old Sun - 13:56 - Follows the studio version quite closely for the first 5 mins or so before going though a number of jazzy guitar/keyboard jams then finally returning to the first verse. Again a very interesting track and an improvement on the studio recording.
Cymbaline - 11:32 - Simular in strucutre to the studio for the first 5 mins although alot heavier. After that the band top playing and a tape of various effects in played for several minutes before they return to reprise the opening.
Atom Heart Mother - 18:33 - This version is played without an orchestra meaning gilmours guitar is pushed more to the fore. The experimental latter stages of the track are not played and after the "funky dung" jam the band return to the main theme before finishing the song. Generally I find to this version superior to the album one as it drops the pomp and alot of the less sucessful experimental passages.
The Embryo - 13:00 - This track is already very rare having only featured on the works capital compilation album. This live version is very different starting with a heavy blues interpretion of the studio version before moving into a jazzy keyboard and bass jam. David Gilmour then graduely takes over with some spacey "seagul" guitar effects like those used in echoes before wright returns with more jazzy keyboard work leading into a reprise of the begining. All in all a very playful track quite simular in feel to alan's phycaledica breakfast.
Blues - 9:14 - "its a bit late for mind expanding music so where going to play somethign to calm down to" is how Roger Waters introduced this layed back blues jam thats very much in the spirit of "more blues" from the bands more soundtrack and act's as a good showcase for more layed back playign from Gilmour.
Just another 12 bar - 5:31 - Like it's name suggest this is a more uptight blues jam that is infact the closing stages of Biding my time from relics.
