The Gov't Mule live archival series, which began in 2014 with Dark Side of the Mule and continued with Sco-Mule, continues with this document from the band's 2006 New Year's Eve Beacon Theater show. This is the "standard version" (among several) of Dub Side of the Mule from the middle of a three-set evening. It's the reggae set with the legendary Toots Hibbert fronting the band on all but the last track. He is in excellent voice throughout, living up to his reputation as one of the greatest reggae singers of all time. For this evening, Gov't Mule comprised original members Warren Haynes on guitars and vocals and Matt Abts on drums, with Danny Louis on keyboards, Andy Hess on bass, and percussionist Sean Pelton.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live At The Roxy (2003)
Reggae | 2cd | EAC Rip | Wv + Cue + Log | covers
Island/Tuff Gong, 0602498010419 | rec: 1976 | 595Mb

Bob Marley and the Wailers were on tour promoting their newly released album, Rastaman Vibration, when they arrived at the Roxy nightclub in Hollywood, CA, for a performance on May 26, 1976. At the height of their early American fame -- Rastaman Vibration would become their only Top Ten album in the U.S. -- they were also a seasoned concert act. They played the same songs featured on their compelling album Live! (a U.K. hit not yet released in America at that time), plus songs from their new record, before a small audience that combined acolytes with industry figures.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Burnin' (1973) (Deluxe Edition)
Reggae | 2cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Island, 0602498233375 | rem: 2004 | 950Mb

Burnin', the Wailers' fourth album overall, was their second for Island Records, released only six months after its predecessor, Catch a Fire. Given that speed, it's not surprising that several tracks -- "Put It On," "Small Axe," and "Duppy Conqueror" -- are re-recordings of songs dating back a few years. But they fit in seamlessly with the newer material, matching its religious militancy and anthemic style. The confrontational nature of the group's message is apparent immediately in the opening track, "Get Up, Stand Up," as stirring a song as any that emerged from the American civil rights movement a decade before.

Robert Palmer - Band In Boston (1979)

Robert Palmer - Band In Boston (1979)
MP3 CBR 320kbps | RAR | 113mb
Genre: pop, soul, reggae, ska, rock

Band In Boston is a promotional live album by Robert Palmer that was released as part of the Warner Bros. Music Show promo series in 1979, which was serviced only to American radio stations. Palmer does some of his hits up to that point, including "Every Kinda People", a cover of Toots & The Maytals' "Pressure Drop", "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", and "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)". Highlight includes a cover of The Pretenders' "Kid", done a year before most Americans heard of the song or The Pretenders. This is not my own rip but was found on another blog and is being used here with permission from the blog. Thank you to the original uploader.

Taj Mahal - Like Never Before (1991)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 361 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 150 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans included
Genre: Blues, R&B, Reggae | Label: Private Music | # 261 679 | Time: 00:47:19

This record was originally released in 1991 after Taj had taken a break for a number of side projects including children's records. He was obviously refreshed - the record is full of new ideas and incorporates new production techniques, check out the lovely song "Every wind in the river" and also the scratching and rap stylings of "Squat that rabbit". A bit radical for blues but both work very well. Taj revists the song "Giant step" and also takes the traditional blues "Blues with a feeling" to New Orleans, with an added dash of steel guitar. Guests include banjo player David Johnson, guitarist David Lindley, Andy Kravitz and Bill Summers and the backing band sound great throughout. This is a really good, imaginative record that saw Taj coming back to form and his next couple of records in the 90s were even better.

Afro-Beat / International / African Traditions / West African

Throughout his career, Femi Kuti, eldest son of Fela, has sought to establish his own musical identity while being the torchbearer (along with his younger brother Seun) of his late father's legacy. That truth can be easily envisaged on the cover of No Place for My Dream, where a woman is walking with a basket on her head through an enormous field of garbage. Recorded in Paris, the album sticks close to the heart of Afro-beat, but Kuti, infuses the music with Latin, African-American, and Caribbean sounds as well.

UB40 - UB40 (1988)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 315 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 143 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans included
Genre: Reggae-Pop | Label: DEP International/Virgin | # DEPCD 13, 0777 7 86388 2 7 | Time: 00:42:57

UB40 was the first indication that the band was abandoning the political inclinations of their earlier work and concentrating solely on pop-reggae. Of course, pop informed all of their albums since Labour of Love, but on UB40, the group concentrates solely on the grooves, from the instrumental "Dance with the Devil" to a sultry cover of "Breakfast in Bed," featuring Chrissie Hynde on vocals. Even though the album and all of its mellow grooves are thoroughly enjoyable, it's hard not to long for something a little deeper, whether it's the tributes of Labour of Love or the edgy Rat in the Kitchen.

Aswad - Reggae Greats (1997)
Reggae | 1cd | EAC Rip | Wv + Cue + Log | covers
Island 550 066-2 | rel: 1997 | 410Mb

Aswad was arguably Britain's most successful reggae band, in terms of both popularity and longevity. Critical opinion on their body of work is often divided; some hail their early material as the greatest roots reggae Britain ever produced, while others find their later pop-crossover phase more distinctive and unique, even at the expense of authenticity. Regardless, Aswad's ability to adapt themselves to the changing times -- new musical trends, shifting personnel -- was ultimately the driving force behind their decades-long career.
