This is the first french language-only album released by the world music superstar Manu Chao, in 2004. The title (with an intentional mispelling error) hides a "french argo" reference to Paris ("Si bérie m' était contée") and the album is considered as a surrealistic hymn to the french capital. It is one of the best Manu Chao's album with great rhythms and lyrics with a playful and tender mood. The song "Helno est mort" is dedicated to the memory of his friend Helno (Noel Rota), the singer of Les Négresses Vertes who died of a drug overdose in 1993. The covers' artwork is by the Polish caricature artist Jacek Wozniak. Enjoy a great album.

Anarchic rocker and world music superstar Manu Chao has always had a vexed relationship with the land of his birth. Son of refugees from Franco’s Spain, and raised in Paris’s tough multi-ethnic suburbs, Chao sees himself as a thorn in the side of complacent, monocultural France, and Parisian snobbery in particular. He has described French music as “bull––”, and seems to prefer to sing in just about any language (from Spanish and English to Wolof) rather than the one he grew up speaking. Yet here he is, in the immaculately enunciated phrases of this album’s opener, Le P’tit Jardin, taking us into that world of deceptively childlike wordplay where the poetry of the lyrics, embodied in the sound of the French language, is the real point of the music. “Siberie” is an elaborate slang pun for Paris, and this album enters the world of classic chansonniers such as Brel, Piaf and Gainsbourg – there’s even a touch of typically Parisian accordion – but with Chao’s inimitable global twist.

Originally released in France in 2004, Sibérie m'était contéee was previously unavailable in the UK. The fact that it has taken nine years to surface here suggests that there wasn’t much faith in an album entirely in French, especially one that doesn’t contain the kind of eclectic punk anthems that are Chao’s stock in trade. But even if your exposure to Chao’s music is limited to Robbie Williams’s cover of the nonsense reggae Bongo Bong, you’ll find this album surprisingly accessible. The nursery rhyme-like Le P’tit Jardin is bolstered by a catchy, featherlight ska groove, reggae trumpet and guffawing backing voices. The plaintive Siberie Fleuve Amour has a beautiful, bubbling balafon accompaniment. Chao is a notorious recycler of his own material, and melodies and lyrics recur or simply repeat themselves from track to track, lending the album a narrative coherence, even if you can’t understand the words. Though Chao claims not to like Paris, the album is a surreal and satisfying ode to this city.
