Band Biography:

Phish - Studio Discography 1988 - 2004 + Bonus

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

During the early '90s, Phish emerged as heirs to the Grateful Dead's throne. Although their music was somewhat similar to the Dead's sound – an eclectic, free-form rock & roll encompassing elements of folk, jazz, country, bluegrass, and pop – the group adhered more to jazz-derived improvisation than folk tradition. Moreover, they sported a looser, goofier attitude; after all, their drummer regularly played a vacuum during their concerts. However, Phish's main claim as the inheritors to the Dead's legacy was their approach to their musical career. The band didn't concentrate on albums, dedicating themselves instead to live improvisation. Within a few years of their 1988 debut, Phish had become an institution in certain sections of America, particularly college campuses and other liberal locales. While their in-concert popularity didn't necessarily translate to huge record sales (their biggest-selling albums usually halted at gold status, with the notable exceptions of Junta and A Live One), Phish's members were still the de facto leaders of the neo-hippie jam band movement.

Guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman, and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth formed the band in late 1983 while attending the University of Vermont. After meeting and jamming in their dormitory, the trio posted flyers across campus to recruit a bassist. Mike Gordon answered the advertisement and he was soon added to the original lineup. Phish began practicing regularly and soon assembled a demo tape; by the fall of 1984, they'd also begun performing off-campus concerts. At this stage in their career, the band was augmented by percussionist Marc Daubert and, occasionally, a vocalist called the Dude of Life. Keyboardist Page McConnell soon joined the group, too, having previously booked Phish to play Goddard College's Springfest in 1985. Shortly after McConnell's arrival, Holdsworth left the group, and both Anastasio and Fishman transferred to Goddard College during the fall of 1986.

Phish - Studio Discography 1988 - 2004 + Bonus

Early in 1988, Phish recorded the debut album Junta, which they sold as a cassette-only release at local shows. The group played their first tour outside of New England the following year, traveling through the Southeast. Phish also recorded another album, Lawn Boy, in 1989, although the album wasn't released until the fall of 1990 (when it was issued by the independent label Absolute A-Go-Go, a subsidiary of Rough Trade). Throughout early 1991, Phish toured America; during the summer, they recorded their third album, as well as a set of sessions with their old friend, the Dude of Life.

Rough Trade collapsed that August, taking Absolute A-Go-Go with it. Phish was left without a record contract, but they were soon signed by Elektra, which released A Picture of Nectar in February 1992. The group then embarked on an extensive national tour to support the album, including a handful of shows on the H.O.R.D.E. tour. That same summer, Elektra reissued Lawn Boy and Junta, which gave fans greater access to the band's early material. Rift, Phish's fourth album (and the first they recorded with a producer), appeared in February of 1993. During Phish's 1993 tour, the group sold tickets specifically designed for those fans who were taping the concert, a major gesture of goodwill. Hoist, the band's fifth album, was released in 1994; one of its songs, "Down with Disease," became the band's first video and received some airplay on MTV. Hoist sold better than the group's previous albums, which was an indication of how large the group's fan base had become. Crimes of the Mind, the album Phish had originally recorded with the Dude of Life in 1991, was released on Elektra Records before the year's end.

In the summer of 1995, the band released the double live album A Live One, which attempted to definitively capture the Phish concert experience. 1996 saw two additional releases – one of them a Trey Anastasio solo project (a free-form jazz side project called Surrender to the Air), and the other a full-fledged Phish album entitled Billy Breathes. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, Billy Breathes garnered the group's best reviews yet. Slip, Stitch & Pass, the band's second live LP, followed in 1997, and Phish continued their prolific output in 1998 with the studio effort Story of the Ghost. Hampton Comes Alive, a six-disc release that captured four full live sets over the course of two performances, appeared in late 1999 and went gold, a testament to Phish's rabid following.

Phish's popularity only grew during the latter half of the '90s, as their ceaseless touring had helped make them one of the top concert draws in the nation. In the spring of 2000, Phish delivered the pastoral studio effort Farmhouse, which was hailed as one of their finest and tightest releases to date; they also landed some mainstream exposure thanks to the single "Heavy Things." However, exhausted by touring and separation from their families, Phish decided to take an extended break, announcing a temporary breakup in October 2000. One month later, Elektra reissued The Siket Disc, which was previously available only through mail order; it featured improvisational tracks from the band's 1997 Story of the Ghost sessions.

Each member branched out into different directions during this period. Anastasio released a series of demos before collaborating with Primus bassist Les Claypool and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland for the bizarre Oysterhead project. He also released an eponymous solo album during the spring of 2002. Jonathan Fishman worked with his own side project, Pork Tornado, as well as the touring jazz combo Jazz Mandolin Project. Page McConnell released the first recordings from his other band, Vida Blue, and contributed keyboards to Tenacious D's first record. Mike Gordon, meanwhile, did some work with friend and former employer Col. Bruce Hampton; he also dabbled in film work, both in front and behind the camera. Finally, both Gordon and McConnell worked on Gov't Mule's The Deep End, Vol. 1.

As for the band, Phish became more a part of American culture than ever before, and they made an appearance on The Simpsons before releasing a massive set of live albums (as well as a DVD) during the spring of 2002. By the end of the year, the group bowed to pressure and announced that they would begin to play live dates again, starting at the end of December. Touring soon commenced and continued for a year and a half; however, following the release of Undermind, the group decided to officially call it quits in the summer of 2004. Of course, this didn't mean that more albums couldn't be released, as a slew of posthumous releases kept the band's spirit alive while maintaining demand for Phish's reunion. allmusicguide

Review by Steven McDonald & David Jehnzen

With great sound and better playing, Phish's debut Junta is highly recommended whether you're starting to discover Phish or are backing up to the beginning. It may be a bit long-winded and unfocused, yet it establishes their dedication to musical exploration effectively – not to mention the typical wild and woolly Phish humor spilling out all over the lengthy tracks. [A 2-CD Elektra reissue features six bonus tracks, including three recorded live in 1988 at Nectar's (the club that gave Phish their start with a regular gig). The live tracks are somewhat dubious in sonic terms, but they're excellent for revealing the improvisational side of the band – the 25:31 "Union Federal" totters to a start and has a couple of wobbly moments, but it's actually fun to listen to.] 4/5 allmusicguide

Lawn Boy was Phish's second album, released originally on September 21, 1990. It was originally released on the Absolute A Go Go Records and Rough Trade labels. It was later re-released by Elektra Records on June 30, 1992.[1] The song "Fee" appeared as the album's final track on the original release, but was deleted from the Elektra re-release. It contains many of the progressive rock and fusion elements of their previous album Junta, as well as bluegrass, jazz, and barbershop quartet. wikipedia

Review by Jim Smith

This album is relaxed, friendly, and a lot of fun. It is their true statement of purpose, capturing Trey Anastasio's unique visions in their rawest form. "Reba," with its absurd lyrics, intricate design, and renegade momentum is one of their best moments, neatly summarizing the band's philosophy in 12 minutes. Anastasio may have played with greater force and potency later on, but his creative spark was rarely brighter than here, and he proves himself to be not only a student, but a master of many divergent styles. allmusicguide

Recorded and Mixed at White Crow Studios in Burlington, VT

Between June and August of 1991

Eight and a half years ago, we played our first gig at Nectar's in Burlington. Nectar Rorris, the proprietor, was happy to give us a gig despite our lack of experience, organization, or a song list long enough to last two sets. The night went well enough and soon we were playing a series of monthly three night stands–three sets a night on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Like countless other bands in Burlington's diverse music scence, those nights at Nectar's taught us how to play. We dedicate this album to Nectar Rorris for 16 years of bringing Burlington live music every night of the week with no cover, and the best fries this side of… France.

Review

by Jim Smith

Phish's second major-label release, A Picture of Nectar is in many ways their best and most accomplished album. Expanding on the musical explorations that dominated Lawn Boy, Nectar incorporates a remarkable mixture of styles, from country, jazz, and calypso to straight-up rock & roll. Lyrically, the band's trademark goofiness is intact, but the playing is more muscular and Trey Anastasio's arrangements have increased intensity and focus. In fact, it's a surprisingly tight record for a band that built its reputation on endless concert jams, although "Guelah Papyrus" and "Tweezer" should satisfy those who enjoy that facet of the band's personality. The album also boasts the classic "Chalk Dust Torture" and most of Phish's finest moments, which are hard to resist for even the most apprehensive listeners.

Rift is the sixth studio album by rock band Phish. It is the band's second concept album, whose narrator is dreaming about the rift in his relationship with his girlfriend. Recorded in September and October 1992 and produced by Muscle Shoals music veteran Barry Beckett, it was released by Elektra Records on February 2, 1993. The cover art was created by New York-based painter David Welker, who worked closely with the band during the winter of 1993 in order to depict each of the album's tracks, with the exception of "The Horse." (For this reason, a horse intentionally appears on the cover of Phish's next album, Hoist). Relix magazine listed "Rift" as one of the most iconic album covers of all time in 2007. The album was certified gold by the RIAA on October 15, 1997. 4/5@allmusicguide wikipedia

Hoist is the seventh studio album by the jam band Phish. At the time of its release, Hoist was Phish's best selling album. Hoist includes guest appearances from Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, and other musicians, as well as actor Jonathan Frakes on trombone. The album is marked by a stripped-down, simple songwriting approach with pop-friendly hooks, a somewhat new approach for Phish. By contrast, the final song, "Demand," contains an extended instrumental section from a 1993 live performance of the song "Split Open and Melt", followed by the first verse and refrain of the Hebrew song "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold)".

The band suggested a few ideas for the album's title before finally settling on "Hoist"; one of the alternate suggestions was "Hung Like a Horse." The band eventually decided this was too vulgar, but decided to keep the visual joke intact for the album's cover. The horse is also a reference to "The Horse," the only song not visually depicted on the cover of Rift, the band's previous release. [1]

Album producer Paul Fox lived next to Jonathan Frakes, whose mailbox is apparently uniquely decorated. Frakes, who plays Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, sat in for a bit during the Hoist sessions, giving name to the track "Riker's Mailbox."[2]

The band released a music video for "Down with Disease", directed by bassist Mike Gordon.

The album was certified gold by the RIAA August 19, 1996. wikipedia

Crimes of the Mind is the debut album from The Dude of Life, a childhood friend of Phish leader Trey Anastasio and a lyrical contributor to many of Phish's early songs. Phish is the backing band for the entire album.

The album was recorded in 1991 but wasn't released until 1994 following Phish's sudden surge in popularity. The Dude of Life performed several of these songs in a live setting with Phish on a number of occasions.

The main riff of "Self" was taken from the Phish song "Chalkdust Torture." wikipedia

Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Thanks to producer Steve Lillywhite, Phish finally delivered a concise pop album with Billy Breathes. Lillywhite had the band cut away their jams and accentuate their songwriting, resulting in a series of tightly written, melodic folk-rock and psychedelic pop songs. Phish still delve into the deeper waters with sweeping songs like "Theme from the Bottom," but what truly impresses about Billy Breathes is the group's seamless eclecticism and how they master all varieties of roots rock and psychedelic styles. With the shorter songs, their musical depth and breadth is all the more apparent and impressive, making Billy Breathes the definitive Phish album the band has always strived to deliver.

The Story of the Ghost is the ninth studio album by the jam band Phish. The Story of the Ghost has been labeled as Phish's "funky" album. It was released by Elektra Records on October 27, 1998.

Much of the album was created from large-scale improvisation. Phish took the best moments of those jams and wrote songs around them, adding lyrics to the songs from a book of lyrics created by long-time Phish lyricist, Tom Marshall. Many of the songs from this album formed the majority of their 1997 "funk" sound - the title track in particular - with Mike Gordon taking a much more pronounced role. The same sessions also produced The Siket Disc. wikipedia

Review

by Jason Ankeny

The party line on Phish is that the band's live shows are so extraordinary, their studio records are almost superfluous by comparison; frankly, it's a ridiculous contention – apples and oranges, really – and moreover, each successive Phish album reveals new layers of intricacy and melodic invention otherwise lost in the epic explosiveness of their concert sets. Their rootsiest and most organic effort to date, Farmhouse is also their most fully developed – these are complete, concise songs and not simply outlines for extended jams, boasting a beauty and intimacy which expands the group's scope even as it serves notice of a newfound pop accessibility. It's a brave record, much less an exhibition of the band's vaunted instrumental prowess than it is a showcase for Trey Anastasio's increasingly skilled and far-reaching songwriting. The opening title cut, a gorgeously rustic country-pop ballad, immediately establishes Farmhouse's muted, relaxed tone, and despite the occasional detour like the sunny funk workout "Gotta Jibboo" or the closing instrumental jam "First Tube," by and large the set opts against kitchen-sink eclecticism in favor of an evocatively pastoral uniformity. In short, Farmhouse is everything Phish's die-hard legions no doubt hoped it wouldn't be, but as a radical reassessment of their music's purpose and approach, in many ways it's closer to the band's true spirit of innovation than any record they've made.

Round Room is the twelfth studio album by jam rock band Phish. It was released on December 10, 2002, by Elektra Records. The album is not a traditional studio album in that it was culled from the band's unedited rehearsal sessions at The Barn leading up to their reunion concert on New Year's Eve 2002 at Madison Square Garden, marking the end of their two-and-a-half year hiatus. wikipedia

Undermind is Phish's thirteenth studio album, released on June 15, 2004. Phish collaborated with producer Tchad Blake on the album, their first time with a producer since 1998's The Story of the Ghost.

Early copies of the album included a DVD with the documentary Specimens of Beauty, a behind the scenes film on the making of Undermind, directed by Danny Clinch.

One month before the album's release Trey Anastasio and, separately, Page McConnell announced on the Phish website that the band would take an indefinitely long hiatus. As such, a number of the songs were not performed live before the 2004-2008 hiatus, but have been played by Phish during their 2009 reunion tour.

Specimens of Beauty is a documentary about the rock band Phish recording their 2004 album Undermind. Directed by famed photographer Danny Clinch, the film shows the techniques used by the band and album producer Tchad Blake, as Phish records what was to be their final album.

Recorded at Trey Anastasio's recording studio, The Barn, outside of Burlington, Vermont, the documentary features Phish in numerous takes of the Undermind track "Crowd Control."

Specimens of Beauty was included with early copies of Undermind on a bonus DVD. wikipedia

Review

by Rob Theakston

What's important to remember is that Phish is the kind of band whose hallmark moments don't happen in the studio, but on-stage where they feel most at home. That said, Undermind continues in the longstanding tradition of almost but not quite capturing the full band on all cylinders. It's the difference between watching an animal in its native habitat and in a caged environment: not quite as exciting, but still a curiosity to respect and observe with interest. Like previous endeavors, the band wastes no time settling into familiar territory, favoring simple song structures and sketches over lengthy instrumental passages (a trait they've deliberately focused upon since Hoist nearly a decade ago). However, Undermind lacks the stylistic diversity that graced many of their earlier albums, opting for a more cohesive sound and tone throughout. Gone are the uptempo, peppy jams and forays into diverse musical waters, replaced here by a band whose members seem to be running on fumes at some points and a full tank of fuel on others. As always, the musicianship remains top-notch, a testament to the high standards of quality Phish have consistently maintained over the past two decades. There are moments of typical Phish brilliance (e.g., opening and closing with an [unintentional?] homage to legendary Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks). Lyrics of surrealist imagery that border on haunting run rampant at times, and the album's closing moment ("Grind") serves as an uncomfortable swan song comparable to McCartney's happy accident at the end of Abbey Road. And while it wasn't publicly confirmed that Undermind was to be their last album (the bandmembers announced mere weeks before its release that this was to be their last record), shades of the band's winter could be subtly interpreted by various song lyrics (especially on "Undermind" and "Crowd Control"). And while the album is still more focused and a much-needed improvement over 2002's Round Room and their finest since Billy Breathes, Undermind is essentially the sound of four musicians growing tired of the limits they've imposed on one another after decades of albums and touring. However, if this is to be the band's curtain call, fans will find solace in a long line of live CDs for years to come.

A Live One is a live album by Phish. It was released on June 27, 1995 by Elektra Records and was the band's first live release, and the only "traditional" live album, mixing songs from several different shows into one composite set. The album was recorded throughout the United States during the summer and fall of 1994. It was the first Phish album to be awarded gold status.

Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Phish's strength has always been its live shows, and A Live One shows why. Given the opportunity, the band takes its songs in every direction, winding through several different sounds within the course of a song. A Live One also features seven previously unreleased songs, making it worthwhile listening for even casual fans. Then again, most fans of Phish will want to hear everything the group has ever played. 4,5/5 allmusicguide
