Ojos de Brujo is a flamenco fusion band formed 1996 in Spain. Their style is mainly flamenco which integrates elements from reggae, hip hop, rock and electronic music. Originally a jam sessions project/collective in Barcelona, which brought together in the mid-'90s guitarist Ramon Giménez with likeminded experimental musicians singer Marina "La Canillas" Abad and percussionist Xavi Turull. In 1999, finally as an official group, Ojos de Brujo issued their first album "Vengue".

With a lineup that consisted of Giménez, Abad, turntablist DJ Panko, percussionists Sergio Ramos, Turull, Maxwell Wright and guitarist Paco Lomeña, Ojos de Brujo went on to record 2002's "Barí", which was followed by an extensive world tour. While it is their second album, it was the group's formal 2002 introduction to the world music community, drawing beats and melodic suggestions from not just Spain but from wherever it wanted to: hip-hop, rock, funk, dance music, reggae/dub, and more, which earned them the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for 2004.

In 2006 they released Techarí, which saw the inclusion of Cuban trumpet player Carlos Sarduy. It was their third album and continued their sonic journey from Barí, which had also guest appearances by Prithpal Rajput (Asian Dub Foundations), Faada Freddy (Daara J) and Nitin Sawheny.

Some lyrics address social issues. According to themselves, the group name Ojos de Brujo reflects this: The eyes (ojos) of the sorcerer (brujo) look deeper into the issues and reveal the truth. But none of the songs take it up with politics directly. Which in my opinion makes the whole thing a bit "light". And Ojos de Brujo can't decide sometimes if they want to accuse or propose something. But i guess they mean well in trying to reflect modern and globalized society in their music. And they don't come short with irony and humor. Both lyrically and musically.

The music itself is their strongest asset and achieves that global fusion feeling by mixing their wide range of influences with nuevo flamenco as their main ingredient. So in the end it's mainly the music that really speaks. A highly passionate and exciting affair.
