New Jersey's Non Fiction was formed from the ashes of the metal band Hades. The core songwriting team took Non Fiction in the tuned down, heavy groove direction that their former band was headed toward before its demise. Their first and second full-length CDs are now re-issued, packaged together in this double CD set. Both albums were marked by AMG Group as "AMG Album pick".

Once New Jersey metallists Hades decided to go their separate ways in the late '80s, several former members formed Non-Fiction. Former Hades singer Alan Tecchio and guitarist Dan Lorenzo launched the group in 1989, attempting to expand upon their metal roots by injecting elements of alt-metal (Soundgarden being the most obvious inspiration). The group, which also included bassist Kevin Bolembach and drummer Mike Cristi, issued several releases during their career, including 1989's self-titled EP, 1991's Preface, 1992's In the Know, and 1996's It's a Wonderful Life. Shortly after the release of their third full-length, both Tecchio and Lorenzo split from the band to join up once more with a re-formed edition of Hades.

Rising from the ashes of Hades and Texan stalwarts Watchtower, New Jersey's own Non-Fiction released its promising 1991 debut Preface to much fanfare in the New York/Long Island/New Jersey area. Unfortunately, this enthusiasm failed to manifest itself in the rest of the United States. Deeply ensconced in the slow doom and gloom of early Black Sabbath-meets-Soudgarden (circa their SST/ Louder Than Love days), Non-Fiction's refreshingly depressing direction was a far cry from singer Alan Tecchio and guitarist Dan Lorenzo's previous outfits. Preface kicks into funeral procession mode with the "Into the Void"-inspired "The My Way". And unlike the prog-lite tendencies of his previous bands which celebrated the let's-try-to-jam-as-many-words-into-a-verse-as-possible dictum, when given the necessary breathing room, singer Alan Tecchio's voice sounds splendid (in a very Chris Cornell kind of way). Lorenzo's tuned-down Les Paul gives way to the album's second track, the even better, dirgy "Listen". Apart from the weak "Aged", the rest of Preface is like one big time warp. Think of it this way: If Trouble had met Toni Iommi around the time of Sabotage and had had a spawn, there's a good chance that its kids would have been Non-Fiction fans.

Non-Fiction was formed by vocalist Alan Tecchio and guitarist Dan Lorenzo after their previous band Hades broke up. I'm not sure how you'd classify a band like Non-Fiction. The band still has a lot of metal elements from their Hades roots, but 1992's In the Know reflects a lot of elements from the emerging grunge scene. In particular, it sounds like the band had been listening to Soundgarden's Louder Than Love … a lot.

Well, if you're going to be influenced by a grunge band, Soundgarden is probably the best choice for a metal-minded band. Lorenzo puts together a lot of doomy Sabbath-inspired riffs and Tecchio sounds eerily like Chris Cornell. That combination, plus the band's intelligent socio-political lyrics, make In the Know a better than average crossover album, though sadly it did not make for a popular one.
