Reedman Walter Beasley has become one of contemporary jazz extraordinary saxman. Walter is an accomplished solo artist with eight-recorded CD's. Five under the Mercury label, in addition to a solo project "Live and More". Walter made his debut for Shanachie records April, 1997 with the CD entitled "Tonight we love". This sultry saxophonist is not a newcomer to jazz, his earlier influences has played a large part in his current career. Walter played trumpet in his earlier years and later switched to playing sax at the age of nine while studying with former Count Basis band member Jimmy Cannon. Walter's influence's are from a wide range of vocalists and musicians, such as Donny Hathaway, Cannonball Adderley, Grover Washington, Jr. and Earth Wind and Fire. Later he added vocals and compositions with his high school band, and continued at Berklee School of Music. The son of two educators, Walter was reared with an assortment of jazz around him. He continued to be open to all ranges of music and traditions at Berklee School of Music, located in Boston where he has taught for the past 12 years. Growing up in El Centro, CA, Walter's exposure to Latin, R&B, country western and jazz music has afforded him the opportunity to work in various genres and approached each one of them differently. Walter states that" he tried to be like a sponge, never giving any more weigh to one genre of less to another. I just think that if the music is good, it will speak for itself." This multi talented instrumentalist, composer, producer, arranger and vocalist has been able to juggle a hectic teaching schedule along with touring and is currently promoting his new CD entitled, "Won't you let me love you". This is the second release under the Shanachie label. With each new release, Walter has been able to bring something new and different to each CD project. Whether is he arranging or singing, Walter's music is a reflection of his life's experiences. Walter recently debut at the legendary Bluenote, NYC, NY with fellow label mate Chuck Loeb.
