EXTRA FEATURE: Interview - Alan Bangs with Nick Van Eden and Kevin MacMichael, January 1987, Hamburgh

The British group «Cutting Crew» was founded in 1985 by vocalist Nick Van Eede and guitarist Kevin Scott McMichael. A native of East Sussex, Van Eden started off with presentations in the school band, which performed the songs of their own compositions as well as cover versions of songs known groups such as the «Small Faces» and «Free». Subsequently, the fate brought him together with renowned producer Chesom Chandler, former bass player «The Animals», once revealed to the world of the legendary virtuoso guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Soon, Chandler sent the young musician on tour in Poland, along with his then-wards, a group of «Slade». Nick also've come up with David Essex, «Hot Chocolate» and another former member of the legendary «The Animals» - Alan Price. However, a solo artist career he was not given - recorded a few singles they totally failed in the early eighties he joined a group of native Sussex «The Drivers», in which he played one of his school friends. Nick and «The Drivers» toured the country, then made a tour of Canada. During this trip he met with guitarist Nick accompanying their Canadian group «Fast Forward» Kevin McMichael. During the tour they decided to create a new team. Soon after his return home «The Drivers» decayed, and Nick was completely free, and after the contract expired, connecting with McMichael «Fast Forward», in the summer of 1985 he moved to the UK. Sowing of the songwriting, they soon made a few demos for the label «Siren Records», stated thus, the beginning of the new group. The following year they were joined by drummer Martin Biddle and bassist Colin Farley and the group itself, called «Cutting Crew», took custody of the company «Virgin». Another unofficial member of the band began to play the keyboard session musician Tony Moore, who toured with them for over two years. «Cutting Crew» debuted with the single «(I Just) Died In Your Arms», which in August 1986, ranked fourth in the UK. Their first album «Broadcast» got quite mixed reviews in the British music press, but despite this, in 1987 they were nominated for the award of "Grammy" in the category "Best New Artist" and reprinted in the United States, the single «(I Just ) Died In Your Arms »topped the charts," Billboard. " All ten songs from the first album is a soft and melodic pop-rock, in fact they were designed in the style popular in those years a new wave of guitar, but unlike the other representatives of this trend, such as «Big Country» and «U2», music «Cuttnig Crew» differed much more commercially oriented - smoothed, polished sound, as well as a distinct melody, the song made them an ideal object to hit the charts, as well as for broadcast on radio and television. Having achieved international popularity, «Cutting Crew» toured around the world, along with other artists, but in the meantime two of their songs became hits - dynamic «One For The Mockingbird» and a romantic ballad «I've Been In Love Before», took the eighth place in the UK and ninth in the United States. However, to consolidate the initial success they have not failed - tighten with the release of their second album, they missed the boat, and when in 1989 finally arrived «The Scattering», he did not call the former the interest and almost fell. A similar fate awaited their new singles «(Between A) Rock and a Hard Place», «The Scattering» and «Everything But My Pride». Recorded musicians, the new material was less commercial in their feed and a little reminiscent of creativity «U2», that «Cutting Crew» originally native surround, surround sound, designed for stadiums and large concert halls. «Cutting Crew» continued to perform, but luck has turned away from Nick Van Eden and his colleagues - was released in 1992, the third album «Compus Mentus» was completely ignored by the public as well as music critics, and the following year the band broke up. Kevin McMichael joined a group of former vocalist «Led Zeppelin» Robert Plant and engaged in writing one of his most successful album «Fate Of Nations», where he acted not only as a guitarist but also as a co-author of four songs. Later he returned to Canada, where for several years in production work and recording with local artists. A few years later, in December 2002, McMichael died of lung cancer in a hospital in the city of Halifax. As for the rest of the team, the drummer, Martin Biddle and bassist Colin Farley chose a career of session musicians, in particular, Biddle was recorded with Italian singer Zucchero and his compatriot Sarah Brightman, and their former leader, Nick Van Eden as a writer, producer and guest vocalist long collaborated with various artists, as well as from time to time acted in some shows in the company of other heroes of the eighties, such as «Simple Minds» or «Marillion». In 2006, Nick released the album «Grinning Souls» under the name of his former band, but two other veterans «Cutting Crew» - Biddle and Farley did not participate in this project. Nick got himself a new composition «Cutting Crew», consisting of professional musicians, behind which was a solid experience in studio and live with various bands and performers, and returned to active tour activity.
