Yup, here’s the real deal, a genuinely great salsa record. For those of us who love Monguito’s singing — I’d argue he’s one of the better singers of the 20th century, and so there — this record, made for the African market, and produced by Alfredo Valdes is a gem. Long improvisations, a seriously grooving band let loose with great arrangements, make it one of the great salsa albums to come out in the 1970s, a model for the fantastic recordings made for the SAR label a bit later. Anyway, Monguito, with his instantly identifiable, slightly nasal voice, floats with precision over the music. He gives a lesson in time, in how to make phrasing, duration and tone all become personal.01. Manicero
