Iron Maiden are back, here in 2015 with their brand new, 16th studio album, and from what I've seen, nobody has really had anything bad to say about it; and rightfully so. This album, despite its somewhat disappointing artwork (which honestly grew on me in the hyped up weeks leading to its release), is as close to perfection as these English rockers ever get. Bruce sounds as good as ever, especially having kicked cancer's ass earlier in the year. His high shriek towards the beginning of 'The Speed of Light' is reminiscent of songs that utilized his scream back in the day, such as 'Number Of The Beast' or 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'. Not to mention his gentle croons in the 18 minute masterful buildup that is the album's finale track, 'Empire of the Clouds', are simply beautiful in the foreground of the brilliant piano & strings towards the beginning of the track. Nicko's drumming is also as good as ever, with his very recognizable style pounding away beneath the melody heavy guitar riffs of tracks like 'The Red and the Black' or the title track. The drums are also very well produced; so there's really not much else that can be said about them. Classic maiden drumming. The bass is mixed very well, almost always audible in the mix of the album. I noticed it most in the title track, as Steve is one of metal's finest bassists, and on a beautiful track like this, I think really deserves to be audible. Now for the most important bit: the guitars. Iron Maiden is a band that has 3 guitar players, and for very good reasons: the harmonies & dueling guitars that this band are known for, are still very prevalent in the music, and still offer the same epic atmosphere as they always have. The solos are also exactly as I expected, not overly technical but still complex & melodic enough to make any fan of older Maiden headbang in approval. The solos have always been great, but there's something that's not only the same… But different about the ones on this album. It's damn near perfect. Overall, the songwriting is absolutely perfect. With tracks like 'The Speed of Light' & 'When the River Runs Deep' taking the heavier grounds of the music, and the beauty of the title track, or the 18 minute masterpiece that is 'Empire Of The Clouds' adding a perfect contrast to the albums heavy & raw production. Even the artwork turns out to be better than it appears on first glance, as you listen to the music & soak in the epic atmosphere, heavy drums & gorgeous guitar harmonies. The vocals & especially guitar solos are just incredible, and I feel that this album might just be my number one for 2015. This warrants a solid 10/10, as the lack of any filler or superfluous tracks makes for the perfect listening experience.
