Leos Janacek - Jenufa (1989)

This opera is well worth listening to! Its very first notes teasingly warn you you're about to hear quite a story…they're full of expectancy, joyful and dance-like. I enjoyed it a lot, it's very much an opera about - and for - the people, Janacek using folk idioms to create sweepingly rhythmic choruses. I'm beginning to understand why janacek is, belatedly, considered one of the greatest opera composers of the 20th C. Yes, 20th C, although chronologically more belonging to the preceding age of late romanticism, Janacek is in fact a forerunner of the modern age.

Performers:

The Glyndebourne Chorus – Ivor Bolton, choir master

Roberta Alexander - Jenufa
Anja Silja - Kostelnicka Buryjovka
