Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, author, music lecturer and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim.

West Side Story is an American musical with a script by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The musical's plot and story are based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The original Broadway production (prèmiere: August 19, 1957), directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold Prince, marked Stephen Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances (a successful run for the time), before going on tour. In 1961 Robert Wise directed a famous movie from the musical. Also in 1961 Lukas Foss conducted the concert piece Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, orchestrated by Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal, from the original music by Bernstein.

On the Waterfront (1954) was the only original film score written by Bernstein. Directed by Elia Kazan and starred by Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger and Karl Malden, this movie won 8 Academy Award, including best picture, directing and actor in a leading role; Bernstein had a Academy Award nomination.
