Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and the latest 24bit 192kHz remastering. One of the most hard-hitting Jimmy McGriff albums of the 70s – a raw live date recorded in Newark – and a set that's a perfect bridge between the sharp soul of his Sue Records sessions and his later funk to come! The whole thing's got a gritty vibe the really recalls the sound of a Hammond combo in a small club back in the day – a sense of recording that's different than the usual Blue Note record, and we mean that in a good way! Future Groove Merchants Fats Theus and O'Donel Levy are both on the record – the former on tenor, the latter on guitar – and Jimmy gets plenty of room to really open up and soar on the Hammond. The group also features the lesser-known Ronald White on trumpet and Joseph Morris on alto – and titles include "In A Mellow Tone", "Groove Alley" and "Man From Bad" – and a nice cover of "Ode to Billie Joe"!

From 1971, this was the second of Jimmy McGriff's two Blue Note releases, a sensational 39-minute live set recorded at the Golden Slipper in Newark, New Jersey. From the title-track opener through the ten-and-a-half-minute rollicking closer (Duke Ellington's "C-Jam Blues"), the funky blues groove never lets up. Spicing things up considerably, to say the least, is the four-man horn section (three saxes and a trumpet, led by Arthur "Fats" Theus, who can really wail, on tenor sax), along with Willie "Saint" Jenkins on drums (not easy to keep up with McGriff, but he does it with verve) and O'Donel "Butch" Levy on electric guitar, who shines throughout and has some outstanding featured moments.

In addition to a pair of Ellington romps ("In a Mellow Tone," featuring a four-horn chorus, is the other), there are two terrific McGriff originals: "Groove Alley," a smoldering slow blues, and "Man from Bad" (making it two great titles!), with McGriff's rolling organ groove setting up Theus's tenor sax for some extremely expressive playing.

There is an absolute knock-out track here, and it's none other than McGriff's take on Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe." It's yet another brilliant McGriff set-up, as his easy-going solo at the start places us in perfect position to be bowled over at the 0:42 mark when the soul groove kicks in with a vengeance. In the fourth minute, Butch Levy's astonishing guitar work, on the heels of Theus's tenor feature, leads into the final chorus and a prolonged fade. It's an inspired effort by all concerned.

The only disappointment for me (if you can really call it that) was that the title (and leadoff) track "Black Pearl" is not the song I was expecting, one of my favorites from two years earlier: the top ten soul and pop ballad by Sonny Charles & the Checkmates, Ltd. Instead, it's a solid organ, tenor sax and guitar funk-groover (composed by Pat Daniel) that was issued as a single.

This is a high-quality Japanese import CD with excellent, feels-like-you're-there sound, but without any audience distractions.
