At the beginning of the seventies, a television producer asked Claude Bolling to create an unusual musical piece of 5 minutes. Claude writes a duet then for his friend - the classical pianist Jean-Bernard Pommier - to play it with Pommier. The benefit had such success, that Jean-Bernard Pommier asked Claude to make together a concert piece in a form of sonata. So, in that way, the juxtaposition and the union of jazz and classical music "a la Bolling" was born.

It was later on, in 1989, that Claude met Emanuel Ax and wrote him a sonata, that becomes the other "Sonate pour Deux Pianistes".

The fact that a pianist with such classical training as Jean-Bernard Pommier could react with so much pleasure, animation and intelligence in the execution of this sonata, proves that the jazz is not anymore a reserved district, a ghetto of the musical world. It also proves the big competence of Claude Bolling to shape a thought and an inspiration modernism of which can be assimilated by all and the marvellous aptitude of Jean-Bernard Pommier today which succeeds not only in illustrating the text brilliantly but that, by interventions where his personality is never stifled by the writing, brings new colouring and unique sensitivity.

This sonata and this concerto are listened with a constant pleasantness. Musical in the fullest sense of the word, ingenious, well driven, vital, giving the soloists pretexts for outrageous virtuosity, they ever go straight to the point and make tired the cloth, as say the painters who know the danger of surcharge and of bloatedness. Our epoch stays in nothing; it is perhaps his best quality. Mozart, also, sings, smiles and passes. It is a good currency for an artist.

The time when antagonism compared "jazz" and "classic" is now past. CLAUDE BOLLING reveals by these recording an aspect less known of his talent of compositor and of interpreter. For him, there are not enemy styles, but only music ". He reveals by these writings that it is perfectly possible to link a pianist of jazz to a classical concert artist, to a quartet with ropes or to a symphonic orchestra. A meeting with JEAN-BERNARD POMMIER, other lover of the piano is at the origin of the realisation of this disc which unites three writings of aspects very different from captivating musical contents of charm, of force and of creative invention.
