Guitarist, composer, and recording artist Geordie Kelly began playing guitar at age 12, and by age 15 he was playing in local rock bands. He was exposed to great music early in life because he grew up in a musically rich household hearing all the great soul and R&B artists such as Ray Charles in his father's record collection and everything from Bach to Dylan in his mother's record collection. He is a graduate of both East Carolina University (BM) and the University of Kentucky (MA) music programs where he pursued guitar and jazz studies to the fullest. His studies at UK culminated in a five-chapter thesis entitled Joe Pass: Elements in the Construction of Selected Guitar Solos. He also studied with Jimmy Bruno over a two-year period between 2002 and 2004. Geordie has shared the stage with artists such as Ray Charles, Bobby Shew, Ritchie Cole, Bob Bowman, Frank Mantooth, Von Freeman, Ed Calle, Maureen McGovern, Grady Tate, Ray Codrington, Miles Osland, Phil DeGreg, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and the Turtle Island String Quartet. He was the guitarist and featured soloist on the acclaimed debut recording by the East Carolina University Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Directions 1 (1993) and the recording by the University of Kentucky Jazz Ensemble entitled Kentucky Kaleidoscope (1996). His latest offering as a leader is a new jazz guitar trio recording entitled Triple Play (2005). He has published a guitar transcription in DownBeat, and was featured as an up and coming student player in 1996. Geordie has also published and presented jazz guitar research as a clinician at the annual IAJE conference (1997- Chicago). He currently teaches guitar and jazz improvisation at the Navy School of Music in Virginia Beach, and performs extensively in the region.
