Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Mustt Mustt (1990) {Realworld}
EAC 0.95b4 | FLAC tracks level 8 | Cue+Log+M3U | Full Scans 300dpi | 279MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Ethnic Fusion, Qawwali

The late, great Pakistani Qawwali singer's first collaboration with producer/guitarist Michael Brook took the passionate, gymnastic tenor out of tradition and into trip-hop nation. Recorded at Peter Gabriel's expansive Real World Studios, the album combines ethnic percussion, programmed beats (some by Gabriel himself), Brook's atmospheric and infinite guitar swells, and loop-based motifs with Khan's complex, ornamented vocal delivery and devotional lyrics. On the later Night Song, Brook and Khan perfected their cross-cultural dialogue, though Mustt, with its fiery vocal runs and funky, ethereal production, has become an important touchstone in the ethno-techno movement that includes Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru.

EAC 1.0b2 | FLAC tracks level 8 | Cue+Log+M3U | Full Scans 600dpi | 998MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Jazz-Flamenco, Fusion

”Huellas” tastes like Jazz and flamenco winds, it is full of freshness and vitality, and somehow, brings together leading composer with the distilled and concentrated Flamenco essence. An overview of this art seen from the outside to inside and from inside out. A flamenco feeling between the sound of a jazz band. A vision of improvisation with new references. Meeting and dispersion at the same compass. An execution for those who feel, breathe and know these fundamentals, which are none others than the deepest soul where there is no time or place.

El Portal - New Trophy (2012) {CamJazz}
EAC 1.0b4 | FLAC tracks level 8 | Cue+Log+M3U | Full Scans 300dpi | 238MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Jazz, Fusion

El Portal comes from Miami, and they took their name from a suburb of 2,500 inhabitants. It's a quintet formed by Nolan Lem on saxophone (all of the pieces were written by him), Rainer Davies on electric guitar, Paul Bedal on Fender Rhodes, Joe Rehmer on bass and Dion Keith Kerr IV on drums. It was in the autumn of 2006 when the five musicians found themselves hiding out in the same house for days from the violent Hurricane Katrina. They made a pact that, if all of them escaped unharmed, they would found a jazz band together.

This debut solo release by Allan Holdsworth has an "in the raw," coarsely presented, jam-session quality complete with warts and all, as well as real gems of jazz fusion shining through. This is the 1990 CD that was digitally remastered from the original analog tapes (AAD/ADD). Tracks 9-13 did not appear on the 1976 CTI vinyl release.

Jeff Richman - Hotwire (2015)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 51:39 min | 120 MB
Genre: Jazz Fusion | Label: Nefer Music Records

As soon as the sprightly melody of “Hit Spot,” the first track of Jeff Richman’s latest album, emerges with electrifying excitement, you might expect a great jazz-rock fusion album that updates the genre from the early days of Miles and Zappa. The punching vamp reminds me specifically of Miles’s Tribute to Jack Johnson, reaching out with palpable spunk; but a gentle atmosphere still invites us, the listeners, in. But this is the most psychedelic or near psychedelic the album gets. Following the flight of “Hit Spot,” we land on the ground for a funky jam called “Seven Up.” It is a great start to an album that jams, grooves, flies, and ruminates.

Experimental ethnic fusion outfit based around the duo of Jean-François Gaël, Pierre Buffenoir, initially with Arcane V members: Philippe Gumplowicz and Youval Micenmacher, and others. Sonorhc (Chronos backwards) played a wide-ranging mixture of styles, covering all sorts of ancient and modern cultural elements, medieval, baroque, oriental, you name it, they mixed and matched, fused and collided, making unusual and original concoctions, resulting in three very different albums, and also Jean-François Gaël et Pierre Buffenoir - Portes D'Orient which was essentially Sonorhc although it didn't bear their name...

For the second and final night of their stop in Charleston, Widespread Panic took the stage at Family Circle Stadium before thousands of cheering fans. JB picked up his guitar and admired the fans, commenting Some of y'all are wayyyy up there! The band broke straight into fan favorite All Time Low, setting the stage for another high-energy night. Next was Saint Ex from Panic's most recent studio album, Dirty Side Down. Chilly Water had fans ecstatically tossing water in the air during the chorus. The beautifully written Pilgrims let the fans slow to down and appreciate one of Panic's inspiring older songs. To close the set, the band played a rocking rendition of Neil Young's Mr. Soul, giving Lighting Director Paul Hoffman a chance to show off his beautiful rig, illuminating the stadium with gyroscopic cones and spotlights of all colors...

Jazz / Fusion

Reissue with DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. Here we have the free-floating, abstract beginnings of Weather Report, which would define the state of the electronic jazz/rock art from its first note almost to its last. Their first album is a direct extension of the Miles Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew period, more fluid in sound and more volatile in interplay. Joe Zawinul ruminates in a delicate, liquid manner on Rhodes electric piano; at this early stage, he used a ring modulator to create weird synthesizer-like effects.

Mick Karn - Dreams Of Reason Produce Monsters (1987) {Virgin} [ft. David Sylvian]

Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters is Mick Karn's second solo album and features him playing a variety of woodwinds and basses, as well as keyboards and drums. The songs are marked by plodding drum tracks colored with simple contrapuntal keyboard and woodwind figures: of the instrumental tracks, only "The Three Fates" escapes this martial treatment. The two tracks that feature lyrics and vocals (by David Sylvian, Karn's former bandmate in Japan) are the most memorable. They emphasize the interplay between Karn's sinuous fretless playing and Sylvian's sonorous voice to good effect.

Zakir Hussain - Making Music (1987) {ECM 1349}
EAC 1.0b2 | FLAC tracks level 8 | Cue+Log+M3U+MD5 | Full Scans 300dpi | 191MB + 5% Recovery
Genre: Ethnic Fusion, Hindustani Classical Music

The key to Making Music lies in its title. This is not about a fusion of East and West. This is about creation for its own sake. The selfsame track opens our ears to the flute of Hariprasad Chaurasia, who turns breath into gold. Guitarist and Mahavishnu Orchestra guru John McLaughlin is another welcome addition to a quartet rounded out by saxophonist Jan Garbarek. As lines curve their way through subtle changes in temperature, we can feel the rhythm being formed, piece by ephemeral piece, even before Hussain lays hands to drum.
