George Russell had a conversation with Miles Davis in 1945 (Russell was Charlie Parker's drummer, Miles his trumpet player) about the ultimate goal of jazz. Miles answered "I want to know how to play ALL the changes," which Russell took to mean that he wanted a deeper understanding of how the notes related to one another; since Miles obviously already knew how to arpegiate each note. While convalescing from having tuberculosis for 16 months, Russell developed his Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, and published the first edition with his paycheck from working at Macy's. Since he couldn't play drums anymore, he chose piano and began a new career as one of the most influential musicians of this century. Dizzy Gillespie recorded an early Russell composition and Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE album was created under the heavy sway of this new theory. (Amazon customer review)
