A showcase for two masterful musicians, Fissures presents saxophonist Idit Shner and harpist Yumiko Endo Schlaffer in a program of works for this unique combination of instruments that has rarely been represented in recorded form. A wide array of composers and musical expression are explored, from Rokus de Groot's bass saxophone feature Cadenza, to Dr. Yusef Lateef's light and transparent Romance.
The format is not so different from the classical violin sonata (pairing the violin with piano). That is, in theory. What actually evolves in these modern compositions are sound tomes, instrumental conversations between two culturally different instruments. Shner plays all the saxophones save for the baritone. She capably handles the behemoth bass saxophone on two pieces, Rokus de Groot's "Cadenza" and Philippe Di Betta's "Fissures." Shner coaxes a muscular tone from the large horn, approaching the came capability Gerry Mulligan had with his baritone. Schlaffer's harp provides a lace foil to Shner's reedy rasp. Far from a simple harmonic instrument, the harp here is used for ornamentation and counterpoint, an oddly disconcerting counterpoint. This is intimate chamber music: introverted and considerate.
It would appear that now is the time for lovers of jazz and classical to broaden their perspectives too, and listen more to the expanding panoply of thrilling music, famous and bubbling up, that's readily available. A jazz record label can play its part, presenting some of the work from artists on its roster that crosses into the classical world. And lend a forum to classical musicians to explore the byways of their tradition, deepening everyone's points of reference and potentially showing paths into musical departures yet to be explored.

This recording issued by Origin Classical, a new imprint of Seattle-based independent jazz label Origin Records, contains quiet and meditative works for unusual combination - saxophone and harp. Highlights in my opinoin are two pieces for bass saxophone and harp - Rokus de Groot's "Cadenza" and Philippe Di Betta's "Fissures."
