Grandes del Tango Vol.11: Alfredo de Angelis (2003)

Short Biography (According to Ricardo García Blaya)
Alfredo de Angelis (a.k.a. "El Colorado") was born November 2, 1910 just outside Buenos Aires. He started his career as a pianist accompanying Juan Giliberti, a tango singer. Shortly he became Anselmo Aieta's pianist substituting for Juan Polito who left the orchestra. In that same line up, Juan d'Arienzo -later to form perhaps the most exciting tango orchestra- played the violin. Before putting together his own orchestra in 1941, he accompanied Félix Gutiérrez, played the piano for Graciano de Leone Orchestra, teamed up with the violonist Daniel Álvarez and joined the Francisco Lauro led Mendocinos Orchestra.

His orchestra debuts in the Café Marzotto to become one of the best known orchestras for the dancing floor. This was both a blessing because he became commercially successful and a demise because he never became accepted among the Argentinian Elite. In a time that imported music (foxtrot, pasodoble, polka…) de Angelis insisted in Tango.

The orchestra's style is harmonious, synchronized and precise in execution. It is these qualities which earned the orchestra popularity, a permanent daily slot (Glostora Tango Club) in the El Mundo radio station and 486 numbers recorded with the Odeon label between 1943 and 1977. Alfredo de Angelis went on to promote duets in his repertoire, that of Carlos Dante and Julio Martel becoming the most popular with such hits as La Pregonera, Remolino and Pastora, two of which are included in this compilation. Other duets of lesser popularity were those forme by Carlos Dante and Oscar Larroca, Juan Carlos Godoy with Lalo Martel and Roberto Mancini.

De Angelis neither had Troilo's transcendence nor Pugliese's, but he was an honest leader that sought refuge in the traditional tango which was easily understood by the people. The evidence is in the amount of records that he recorded and that resulted in an impressive commercial success.
