Two American musical giants of the 20th century, together in the same collection. George Gershwin (1898-1937) and Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) left behind a monumental work, covering a vast musical spectrum, from popular musicals and jazz masterpieces to symphonic music and concertos. In this Emi-Classics BoxSet you will find complete works like "Rhapsody in Blue", "Porgy and Bess", "West Side Story" and others, but also pieces like "Cuban Overture", "Candide Overture", "Fancy Free" and more samples of less known compositions of Gershwin's and Bernstein's music.

George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. He wrote most of his vocal and theatrical works, including more than a dozen Broadway shows, in collaboration with his elder brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin. George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public. His compositions have been used in numerous films and on television, and many became jazz standards recorded in numerous variations. Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs.

Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, author, music lecturer and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. According to The New York Times, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history." He was probably best known to the public as the longtime music director of the New York Philharmonic, for conducting concerts by many of the world's leading orchestras, and for writing the music for West Side Story, as well as Candide, Wonderful Town, and On the Town. Bernstein was the first conductor to give numerous television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 until his death. He was a skilled pianist, often conducting and playing piano concertos at the same time. As a composer he also wrote symphonies and other concert music, but most of his fame as a composer during his lifetime was based on the tremendous success of West Side Story.
