If you are a fan of the old Estrellas de Areíto, this CD might disappoint you (which is my case ;). But if you look at this new incarnation as a totally different group, you'll be moving your hips nonstop.
The majority of the CD is a combination of Timba/New York Salsa that works. Charanga Habanera singer Tirso Duarte rocks on "Tal como empezó". His vocals remind me of a younger Mayito Rivera. The horns have that New York 70's sound. Very nice indeed.
The same goes for "Ya no hace falta", sung by Sixto Llorente. The song is straight up salsa. You only know it's Cuban due to the Timba piano style during his soneos.
One of the few straight up Timba songs is the remake of Paulito's "La Habana." Has Timba gone that far that now they are making remakes of Timba songs? Hmmm…
Just like the latest Charanga Habanera CD, Areíto doesn't forget their roots. A couple of classic Cuban songs are performed. Most notably "Tres lindas cubanas", with violins and flutes. As if to say to the older folks, "hey we can also do this!"
For whatever reason, Timba has not crossed over to the East Coast (New York, New Jersey, etc). However, this CD shows how to appeal to the salsa crowd without losing the Timba base. As Galindo sings, "Esto sabe a cubano!"
